Aston Villa Managerial Stats
« on: March 09, 2021, 02:16:15 PM »
Can anyone help? Is there a record list of our managers and their win draw loss percentage stats (just with us/not with any other clubs later in their career) somewhere? Following a conversation today I was after Ron Saunders in particular (and ideally a comparison with Martin O'Neill) but then it got me thinking about how his record compared to our other managers.

The conversation that prompted my request was about "winning mentality and managers hating getting beat - eg Guardiola/ Mourinho and managers who didn't mind losing eg Arsene Wenger - the way he played weaker teams in the League Cup and Europa League).

So would Ron Saunders have sacrificed the UEFA Cup 2nd leg and rested 8 players as Martin O'Neill did?

Garde and di Matteo. Wow.

At the time Sherwood was sacked I felt he deserved more time and I remember thinking the same about di Matteo. But looking back at the stats I have no idea what I was thinking.

Ron Saunders was the last to clock over 200 games.

Garde, Di Matteo, Sherwood all still under the age of 50 when leaving us and all appear to have done little since.

Here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Aston_Villa_F.C._managers

Doh! Massive fail. Thanks Mister E. I initially searched for Ron Saunders and they weren't listed on his wiki page and I later saw Martin O'Neill had it on his wiki but didn't think to put in exactly what I was looking for.

Bruce's should have been higher - considering they was all in the Championship.

Clearly RDM and Garde were a waste of space

Blimey, Dean Smith will be our longest serving since MON if he lasts another half a dozen games; it feels like he's only been with us 5 minutes.

As for win percentages, he's up in the 40s which is where the managers we look back on as successful have all been at. He's behind them all right now but given more time I think it will improve.

Lambert the worst manager we've had out of those who we gave more than 100 games. Not surprising.

Surprised at how few managers we've had who didn't get 100 games. Just 11. For comparison (but not including short term appointments) the Bitters have had 31, the Rags have had 19. Hmmm fickle ehh?
