Aston Villa vs Newcastle Utd pre-match thread (POSTPONED)
« on: November 30, 2020, 12:11:43 AM »
I've recently read the concerning news at Newcastle Utd. They have had to cancel training with match against Aston Villa in doubt amid Covid-19 fears.

"Newcastle United were forced to abandon plans to stage a first-team training session on Sunday amid fears they are in the grip of a coronavirus outbreak. Two more players have tested positive over the weekend, meaning five members of the first-team bubble – understood to be four players and one member of staff – are now self-isolating.

The situation has prompted another round of testing, with Steve Bruce waiting anxiously on the results as the club’s training ground is deep-cleaned. Already preparations for Friday night’s trip to Aston Villa have been disrupted and there now has to be some degree of doubt as to whether that Premier League fixture will take place."

Its really a reminder of the difficulties of continuing sports when covid 19 is around.
Particularly in tier 3 areas
And they expect teams to travel around and fulfil fixtures.
Don't know what to think as all this football goes on with all the suffering around.
Impacting football and players and Aston Villa season
Sometimes I think maybe they should have just cancel this 20/21 season  completely

I did read somewhere that (new) infected cases where down 30% after lockdown in UK. Here in Norway its been going down last few days, they think we are over the top in this second wave. Some days ago I did reflect on the posibilities of the whole season being abadoned cause of Covid, that dosent seem so much a possibility now. Not much chance Newcastle will get our match cancelled, allready been matches going trough when several palyers been out cause of selfisolation (Liverpool fx).

If a game is forfeit, isn't it recorded as an 8-0 defeat or something like that?

I would rather see us beat them convincingly the traditional way anyway.

Has to go ahead then by the looks of it. Although technically, Nan's Hair's anti-football could already be classed as a threat to public health. Being in lockdown/Tier3 has some silver-lining at least for season ticket holders.

Have we actually had any postive cases in the squad since resumption?

Seems we've surprisingly got off lightly compared to majority of clubs so far unless we've just not released details to the press.

West Brom seem to have had 5-6 of their squad out at various points in last three weeks.

Well that's just screwed over the smaller clubs even more.

Carabao Cup: Tottenham handed bye into fourth round after Leyton Orient tie called off - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54295512

I think there's a genuine risk now that clubs try to hide covid cases amongst their players if they get penalised for doing the right thing.
Interested to see if the same rules will apply to Newcastle if they have to call it off.

If we don't get awarded the win, Leyton Orient would have a very good case for saying that they've been severely wronged.

If we do get awarded the win, then for us goal difference will cease to matter.  Suppose they did award the tie 8-0 to us ... if we missed out on champions league football by a 1 or 2 goal difference, we could realistically argue that had we played Newcastle's youth team with our fully fit first team, we might well have beaten them 11-0.

The FA have placed themselves in a very awkward position IMO.

They would probably say they had no choice with the Orient game because they couldn't fit it in anywhere else. With League games there is ample opportunity to play later in the season, this has already been done with some lower league games (Oxford v Swindon, off the top of my head). So I suspect the game would be postponed rather than forfeited. That said, I'm not sure why the league couldn't say Newcastle have to play some of their kids if they don't have enough first team players. Middlesbrough were, famously, deducted points for refusing to play the kids when they had lots of players out through illness.

No messing about with this one. No VAR controversies. No missed sitters, missed penalties or sloppy defending.

Newcastle are like a piece of chewing gum that you've had in your mouth for way too long. They're flavourless and hard work.

Villa will score first and will win 2-0. No excuses.

ChronicleLive understands there is no set number of confirmed Covid cases that the Magpies would need to record before appealing to rearrange the fixture.

Requests for postponement are considered on a case-by-case basis by the Premier League, and there is no official deadline for United to lodge an appeal by. Any decision would be made by the Premier League's board.

Guardian is reporting that Newcastle's training ground is closed until Wednesday at the earliest due to extra Covid cases over the weekend. Bruce wants a postponement as he feels that lack of training will risk injuries in the game.

Could be down to the Premier League to decide.....

Well, they haven't played since last Friday night. Presumably our squad are resting today meaning we'll only have tomorrow and Thursday to prepare.
