Papa Bouba Diop - Senegal legend and former Portsmouth and Fulham midfielder - has died at the age of 42.

I read he had been ill for a while, didn’t say what the illness was though.

Remember him scoring the winner in the opening game of the 2002 world cup against the then world champions France, it was a huge shock. RIP.

He was a really big unit.

I seem to remember him being the bloke who broke Darius Vassell's ankle in a game at VP.

What a shame to die so young.

He was a pretty good player and part of some giant Fulham and Portsmouth teams. Terrified me every time they git a corner.

Only 5 years older than me.

I ran the London marathon in 2006 and had a few beers in the pub after with friends.

One of them, an Aussie woman, brought a mate of hers who was on the physio staff at Fulham. Apparently Boupa Diop was built like a god but absolutely refused to do any weights. It was his natural build - natural for a full time sportsman that is.
