This is interesting:
There were offers again for him this summer and Monchi was of the view to sell him or Watkins to help PSR
And last summer  Manchester United came close to signing Emiliano Martinez from Aston Villa before Erik ten Hag opted to buy Andre Onana. And that was according to Martinez agent.

I think you misinterpreted what he said - he said selling Ollie was an option, but that he thought it was the right option. It would have solved PSR but compromised competitiveness which they didn’t want to do.

What is interesting is that there does seem to have been interest in Martinez the past two summers but it's never become a saga of will he won't he. He's said as much himself but it implies the man himself is very happy here.

I think the new contract would have a high release clause, and only for Champions League clubs would say we didn't requalify.

Though I do think if Martinez was sold, it would not have been this recent summer window but last summer, when he was apparently close to Manchester United.

Now it's clear league-wise we are better and as competitive as them. Martinez wouldn't move there.
I don't think unless it's PSR that Emi will leave next summer, and I sure protected ourselves with a hefty release clause.

I think Emery and Vidgany thought Luiz from the options available I dont think Monchi felt the same.

I bet it is massively pissing Emi off that we seem incapable of keeping a clean sheet.

Well one of the Arsenal goals was mostly down to him, so he's not blameless.

With the second goal, he probably could do better, but also looked like the flight of the ball was being blocked by Torres. But also we had already conceded so that wasn't the loss of the clean sheet.

When was he apparently close to joining that leaking circus?

I believe his agent stated something a few months back about last summer. Probably just the opening shots in the contract negotiations.

Quote
United were in the market for a new goalkeeper after seeing David de Gea depart last summer. They opted to reunite Ten Hag with his former Ajax charge Onana by buying the Cameroon shot-stopper from Inter. However, agent Gonzalo Goni says many in the club wanted Martinez instead, and some came to regret the decision not to bring the Argentine to Old Trafford.

"Last year he was very close to Manchester United, the coach opted for Onana, because he already knew him," Goni told ESPN. "But everyone at Manchester United later maintained that the ideal goalkeeper to win was Emiliano Martínez."

In the last 5 years Argentina only suffered 2 defeats in 60 or so matches!

Yeah, I think Martinez has more major trophies than he does defeats with Argentina.

Not even Nigel Spink could claim that in May 1982.

No, lost 2-0 on his debut at Forest.
