The man’s a Football Agent for gods sake, if you trust anything any of them say I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Agent chats shit shock. 'Very close' my arse.

Why do you find it so hard to believe?  Not at all having a dig, just curious.

It's just so out of the blue. I know we don't always get everything at the time, but there's been nothing so much as the slightest whisper for this one, not all year. Then an agent, whose job is to exaggerate, comes in and says it was 'very close'?

I just don't buy it. I can buy that there was some preliminary interest but that Ten Hag made the decision to go for Onana - frankly, they'd have been foolish not to look at Emi in their position. But I'd be very, very surprised if this was a transfer agreed by all parties and all set to go before Eggy Erik stuck his oar in.

^ I'd think it more likely that there was some definitive interest, and Emi was open to it, but no official moves were made because Ten Hag decided he wanted Onanna.

So it was close in the sense that if an offer had been made it probably would have happened, but technically it was nowhere near close because they never made an offer.

I'd believe a few of our top players would have been open to moves last summer. We had a brilliant run from when Emery came in, he took everyone's level up, and other clubs would have taken notice of players they'd have ignored 12 months before. We were making strides but we were still "only" in the 3rd tier of Europe, and aside from Emery himself I doubt anyone was 100% putting their faith in us getting CL this season. So if a CL club had come in for someone, I think they'd have had to seriously consider it.

This summer though, financial reasons aside, none of the top players should be even thinking about a move.

I don't think there's any guarantee that Man Utd would've offered us enough. We know he's pretty much our most important player.

Emi is the best goalkeeper in the world so of course he’s going to be wanted by other teams doesn’t mean to say he’s gonna go

Martinez’s agent was probably approached and they had preliminary talks about how keen the player is and potential wages. That ignores the fact Man U were also speaking to other keepers and Villa probably weren’t ever approached.

So not very close.

Well we tend to believe stuff if we want to hear it but less so if we don't.  Not sure why his agent would, a year after the apparent event, say that it was really close?  I don't get what he gets out of it.

"World's most entitled club wants world's best goalkeeper" isn't much of a story.

The potential for a renegotiation of the players contract, & therefore a payday for the agent.

If there was no official bid, Martinez was as close to signing for ManU last year as I was to marrying Jennifer Connelly...

The Man Utd nanager chose Onana over Martinez? Yep, that sounds believable.

Considering they made 0 bids, saying he was very close to joining them is clearly a load of bollocks.
