Brilliant words from Martinez.
And with Emi you know he means it.
I've always thought he should be captain.

Was that at the same time you were suggesting he should be replaced by Olsen?

No, I got the impression there was an issue from reports and that Emery wanted to see Olsen get some playing time, especially after the 4-2 loss at home to Arsenal, where Emery was furious and Martinez didn't play to team instructions in the final minutes of the match, and then the world cup celebrations was reportedly causing a rift.

Martinez has always been first choice. Number one goalkeeper ability to me.
There was some concern too that playing out from the back was not his strongest strength, but everything appears to be on track and for Martinez to carry us onwards and upwards.

Fairly horrendous "insight" that was, as it turns out.

I would say to that Emi Martinez has had to acquire further skills and expertise necessary for passing out to players in addition to developing instincts to come out as Sweeper Keeper
Distribution has been developed with the coaching staff.

He's a special goalkeeper. A winner. World Class Number one in the world.
He has an aura when players come one-on-one and they are obviously intimidating by his presence he's totally world class at that however I don't think he's world class at distribution even though he has had some excellent passing out moment sometimes it could be better.

I think that's fair.

Absolute nonsense. His distribution is superb, and he's a hugely important part of how we play, ie building from the back.

You’ve been a consistent critic of Martinez. Complaining the loudest about his time wasting, predicting Olsen would be the keeper because you believed some nonsense (probably Footyinsider) about a non existent rift with Emery. Don’t now claim he should be captain when you’ve been critical of his professionalism. And then there was the whole WC trophy celebration scandal you spent weeks going on about. Let’s not forget that.

To be fair, I don't think Martinez is the best with the ball at his feet. He's getting better and I wouldn't have any other keeper, but there are times when he hits it longer that it isn't as good as it could be.

He's got loads better in terms of his touch and shorter range passing, and I think half the battle with this type of play is having a keeper that actually looks convincing with the ball at his feet and Emi does. Robin, in contrast, does not.

I remember one absolute belter in particular, which was the suggestion that Emery might play Olsen in a league match at Everton rather than Martinez, one of the main reasons being "he knows the ground".

It's an endless stream of horse-shit.

I shudder at the very thought of Olsen, never mind just the thought of him trying to play the ball.

If you're an opponent, you just put on your quickest striker and tell him to close on Olsen and they'll get a result. He's just not the right fit for style of play.
