Unai Emery has encouraged Emiliano Martinez to readjust back to life at Aston Villa quickly after he helped Argentina win the World Cup.

The goalkeeper is now back at Aston Villa after he played brilliantly in Qatar as Argentina won the World Cup for the third time.

He is due to be available for Villa’s New Year’s Day game at Tottenham after missing their 3-1 Boxing Day loss to Liverpool.

But after his heroics in Doha – and controversial celebrations – Emery wants the 30-year-old to be ready emotionally.

What makes you think for a second that he won’t get his head down and earn his money. And for what it’s worth it’s 24 hour sports media, social media and obsessed fans making more of a deal of this than he is. If this was 1986 and he was in that Argentina team most of the celebrations including anything specific to him would go unnoticed. He’s done nothing wrong other than achieve a major career milestone and have a lot of fun with it. I don’t see the issue. And of this was a summer WC none of us would be rushing him back because he would naturally have the time off. Having games literally after the tournament ended is stupid.
