Douglas Luiz to Juventus.

A transfer that definitely worked out better for us than it did him.  I wonder what went wrong there?

Sold McInally that summer too, our best defender and attacker and then nearly won the league.

I'd forgotten McInally went to Bayern after his brief stint at Villa.  I remember him scoring more than the 18 goals he apparently did score for us (wikipedia)

OK - I get the argument of selling top players at the end of there peak and replacing them.

Just - I cant think of a time when we have sold a top player and it didnt make us worse - until that happens - it going to be difficult to believe.
Andy Gray to Wolves?

I was gutted when we sold him but I seem to remember we played much better after, more as a team rather than a bunch of also-rans always looking to pass it to Andy to do it all. And of course it didn’t take too long after for us to have our two greatest seasons - in which time he won, what, a League Cup?!

Didn't include him as you could make the case that had we replaced him, we would have won the league. It was fairly miraculous we took it to the penultimate weekend of the season with Olney then Cascarino as our centre-forward.

Chris Nicholl replaced by Ken McNaught.

Back on topic.  There’s such bad journalism on this.  There’s one ‘report’ today speculating that Man United might offer us Onana, Bayindir and Sancho to low ball the Martinez price:

I’d want £20m extra if they offered those

I just don't see why players are so desperate to sign for United.

If Martinez goes to Man Utd, it’s just for the cash. They aren’t going anywhere any time soon and aren’t even in Europe next season.

I'd be happiest if he went to some football wilderness.Inter Miami would be a good fit.

It will be more than just about cash.  If his family are settled in the UK, that will play a part too.
