Malen has played 14 times for them, they've won 4 of those.

Since he joined them they've lost four times in 16 games and somehow you think they're 'shit'.

But ultimately forget hypotheticals Unai sees them in training all the time, as he has done with a number of strikers and Ollie is first choice every time. He sees more than all of us and has shown he’s quite good at this.

That's basically it, Unai loves Watkins for whatever reasons he may have. Unai trusts him and he obviously delivers what Unai wants for the team. I think other than team ambition Unai is on a personal mission to make sure Watkins is in the England World Cup squad. If yesterday is anything to go by, Unai has finally set up the team to play to Watkins strengths again.

Actually it's 5 wins, not 4. I forgot Torino. Their win % with Malen starting is 36%, without him it's 62%. I was being a fair bit tongue in cheek but he certainly hasn't improved them.

It doesn't mean scoring loads of goals in those games is to blame though, does it?

Again, I was being tongue in cheek as it was said about Bent. That said, we just stuck 7 past a team they lost to, so they are shit.

We got better with Bent in the team, as I recall. Until he got injured. While he was away Benteke rendered him irrelevant, and, in any case, he was never quite the same when he returned. I may have misremembered as I often try to forget the 2010s.

Since he joined 6 wins, 6 draws and four defeats with a long injury list. They were hardly pulling up trees last year before he joined. They pretty much win and lose the games you expect them to. The draws have actually been credible but they have suffered a couple of dodgy defeats where you'd have expected them to win. They have some favourable games now until the end of the season so it will be interesting to see how they finish.

Even if they don't qualify for Europe I'd still expect them to sign Malen.

I'm sure Percy had stats that while Bent scored plenty, teams did worse with him in. I'm too lazy to look it up to check though. Roma being shit is the hill i'm planting my flag on today.

It definitely can be a thing. Ronaldo seems to have caused this a lot in his latter years. I don't watch Roma though to know but results suggest he hasn't had a massive impact to their overall trajectory. Hopefully he keeps scoring and they buy him because Unai didn't fancy him as first choice.
