Am I the only one thinking as to why Dwight Gayle doesn’t get more starts for Newcastle .Surely he’s more of a goal threat and more of a “pest” than Joelinton ?

Dwight Gayle is a great footballer . Makes great runs down the channels and a great link up player . Maybe a drop down to the championship would see him get more game time would certainly love him to be in our squad

Just seen the Brighton non goal. Ok, yes the second whistle happened just before the ball crossed the line but why did he whistle again? As soon as the ref did the first one, the ball is in play. He was happy to whistle so how could it be too quick? We aren't talking about jumping out the way of an Henry freekick without blowing the whistle thing here.

The ref cocked up and panicked, simple as that I think then VAR backed up his second whistle but nothing was explained to anyone on the pitch. A right mess really.

I'm guessing it was because he blew whilst the keeper was still on the far post. Surely that is the keepers fault and not the refs. You are right he panicked and then thought the ball had gone in before the second and was "saved" by VAR although they were correct on it hadn't so I don't blame them this time for that decision.

Indeed.

At a minimum he should be dropped/ demoted for the next round of fixtures.

But Kevin Fiend got away with it last year so I don't see this muppet being sanctioned.

Nowhere in Law 13 Free Kicks, as far as I can recall does it state that a referee should blow a whistle to signify the taking of said free kick.  It can clearly be seen that Dunk asks Mason can he go ahead to which I would imagine Mason says yes.  The fact that the goalkeeper isn't where he perhaps shouldn't have been is totally irrelevant.

The whole point of taking a free kick of any sort is to punish the offending side not to make it easier to defend any transgression and the taking of a quick free kick is one way of doing this.

A quick free kick also helps to eliminate the 'crowding' of the referee should the offending team consider it contentious.

During my time, if a player wanted to take a quick free kick and I was happy I'd just tell him 'whenever you're ready' no need for whistles.  However, if there's been a delay in the taking of the free kick, out of courtesy and common sense I would always whistle.

As far as I can remember, Mason having allowed Dunk to take the kick and then blowing a second time meant that he had allowed the game to restart and then stopped it again.  Having stopped it without any infringement of the laws meant that to restart it again he would have to drop the ball at the point where the ball was when he blew which I believe was almost on the goal line, so the resultant drop ball would take place on the six-yard line.  I know the law has changed regarding drop ball and the team in possession gets repossession of it so good luck in sorting that one out!

End result as everyone is saying: the referee dropped a bollock, and a mighty big one.  In fairness I feel sorry for him.

I think he said yes, then saw Johnson was nowhere near ready and had second thoughts.

I don't have much sympathy for Brighton though. They're struggling because they are diabolical in the final third and if you miss two penalties then its your own fault that you don't pick up any points.

I felt sorry for him too, he knew he'd had a total mare and didn't know what to do, we've all been there.

One of the reasons they stop play is to make sure the wall is back far enough and they get to use their special spray, if a player tried to take it quickly and it hit a player who was 5 yards away they'd be screaming to have it again and for the player to be booked.

On MOTD Lineker was saying players should be able to take it whenever they wanted, and even play it to themselves. It would be interesting to see that play out in real football over a few games. It might stop the annoying 'tactical fouls' and 'taking one for the team'. I imagine it would be total chaos though.

You'd just have a man designated to stand on the ball everytime and you'd never have a quick free kick.

I like Potter, think they're a good team. I'm not really sure what more he can do though. He's setting up the team to create 20 chances a game, they just can't hit a barn door.

Didn't the little ref's club try to say he blew again because of pushing in the wall? That's clearly horseshit as there was nobody near. It would be so refreshing if he put himself up for an interview after and just admitted he'd had a mare, apologise, and we all move on.

Dunk did exactly the same in 2019.

Unsporting behaviour, trying to cheat, could have been booked.

Either scrap walls altogether or if we persist with walls, make it clear free kick not to be taken until referee blows his whistle. No asking for a quick one to pull a quick one.

Refs have enough on their plate trying to get walls 10 yards etc without some smart arse asking to take a quick one.  :)
