1972 accounts
« on: August 24, 2020, 10:49:32 PM »
Steve Stride posted the 1972 accounts on Twitter, the changes between then and now are staggering. TV money didn't even cover stationary etc and the programme was 4x as profitable as TV revenue.

Said else where, but for wages, split evenly across 25 players and coaches, would be £6440 and £72,000 p/a accounting for inflation.

Which apparently equates to an average league two salary today !

The first time I've seen some Villa accounts which don't mention the word "amortisation".

Doug had been at the helm for 3 years then. In the early part of the 21st century he was still trying to get the expenditure down to those figures if he could !

We're not fickle. We just didn't anticipate that your worth would depreciate over time.

Back then they called it "Depreciation". ;)  One thing I don't see is a line item for "Image rights".

We paid out around twice as much in gate receipts to other clubs as we received. I assume Doug put all his effort into changing that rule just as the emphasis was tipping to TV revenue.

Being in the third division nearly every club got its best crowd of the season against us, but our homes attendances were still far bigger. (Average attendance in 1970/71 was 26,123). Having said that, you can still look at Youtube clips with the ground looking like its got well over 30k and the official attendance being a few thousand less. Once all the turnstile counters were totted up (lots of fans handing their cash over on the day), the figure would be taken up to Doug in the directors box during the game. Any `alterations` would be made at this point and during the second half a tannoy announcement gave the official attendance.

He didn't, because back then the importance of helping the smaller clubs was still seen. We were quite happy that we helped keep Walsall in business.

"Refund of Football League Levy."  Is that what Daniel was calling himself back then?

I know it’s all relative to what money was worth then
But I love seeing things like this

it just shows you how things have changed over the years for good and for bad
