It is no coincidence that our more successful teams had experience, leadership and character.

Rimmer, Swain, Evans, McNaught, Mortimer,Bremner, Cowans, Withe.

Spink, Evans, Gage, Keown, Mountfield, Neilson, the Gray twins, Birch, Garry Thompson, McInally.

Bosnich, Staunton, Teale, McGrath, Richardson, Townsend, Saunders.

Southgate, Ugo, Taylor, Yorke

Friedel, Mellberg, Laursen, Barry, Young, Milner, Carew.

MON even got Warnock, Dunne, Collins, Curtis Davies, Reo-Coker and Gabby playing like world beaters for a while.

Ron Saunders
Bosnich
Robson, God, Nicholl, Staunton
Bremner, Mortimer, Cowans, Morley
Gray, Little
Subs
Spink, Barrett, Gidman, Ehiogu, Rioch B, Merson, Shaw

I’d also reach back into history for Frank Barson in case we ever came up against our neighbours from Sandwell and A**y Br**n was playing.

Interesting to see how poor we've been at RB in the large 30 years that Earl Barrett, a steady journeyman, gets included in a couple of teams.

Also, I can't believe Monty was born in 1990. I always considered him a wise sage. Were you 40 in the womb?

Agreed, Barrett didn't stay that long with us either. Mark Delaney was a decent player, who suffered badly with injuries, was my pick but hardly an outstanding player either. Other flank the same, Staunton was a fine player on the ball but not the greatest defender. Wright was solid for a number of years, after that just a series of hopeless left backs.

The competition at centre half in comparison was huge.

Birthdate - 1960

Started Supporting – 1966 (approximately)

Manager/Coach – Sir Ron Saunders (sub Big Ron)

Keeper – Bosnich – top notch keeper albeit slightly mad

Defender – Gidman – Just edges out Swain as the most exciting attacking RB I’ve seen
Defender – Staunton – Cultured left foot and could play left midfield as well.
Defender – McGrath – Masterful and majestic
Defender – Laursen – A massive presence in the centre of defence

Midfielder -Platt – a world class attacking midfielder at his best.
Midfielder -Cowans – Consistently excellent over many years
Midfielder -Milner – Great all round player with excellent attitude
Midfielder – Morley – The most exciting winger we’ve had if only for a couple of seasons

Attacker – Yorke- went on to show he was world class
Attacker – Gray The most exciting player I’ve seen in Villa colours, gutted when he left.

Subs
Keeper – Spink – narrowly edges out Rimmer
Defender – Swain – Loved him to bist, juts liked Gidman that little bit more
Defender -Mellberg – Great defender but not as good on the ball as Laursen
Midfielder -Barry Consistent over many seasons
Midfielder -Grealish has it all but needs to live up to it
Attacker -Shaw Very tight between him and Yorke – would have bettered Lineker if not for injury
Attacker -Benteke – Absolute beast with plenty of skill – shame about his post Villa career.

Honourable mentions/Also considered – Merson, Rimmer, Southgate, Cahill, McGinn, Cropley, Daley, Macinally. Walters, Hateley, Aitken, Nicholl, Little. Gibson, Delaney, Parker, Houghton, Atkinson, Saunders, Carbone, Delph, McMahon, Bremner, Deehan, Graydon, Williams, Rioch, Leonard, Withe, Evans, Young, Carew, Angel, Milosevic, Mortimer, Taylor, Ugo, Townsend, Dublin, Petrov, Collymore.

I'm with Chicago Lion on Ashley Young, decent enough player but I really didn't like him.

1989

1995

Brian Little

(Looks ridiculously attacking, and doesn't really fit with Little's favoured formation, but I don't claim to be a manager, and think this would be a pretty entertaining matchday squad! We'd concede a fair few, but score lots as well.)

                           Bosnich
                              (GK)

 Delaney    McGrath     Laursen     Wright
     (RB)         (CB)             (CB)           (LB)

                               Milner
                                (CM)
                Grealish                Barry
                   (RM)                    (LB)
                                Young
                (Roaming AM/winger)

                    Yorke                Carew
                     (CF)                   (CF)

Looks a bit narrow, but with Milner's work-rate and Young given license to roam both wings, plus Barry dropping deep to support from the back, and Grealish pushing forward to link up with the forwards, I thought it would be pretty fluid.

Subs:
Friedel (GK)
Staunton (DF)
Southgate (DF)
Merson (AMF) - just for that bit of guile/magic
Ian Taylor (MF)
Agbonlahor (AT) - purely for the pace from the bench
Benteke (AT)

This surprised me, too. I'm ten years older than Monty!

I've concentrated on my formative years of supporting the Villa when there were far more goals in the team (=more fun)

1960
1971

Saunders (Crowe legacy was good)

Burridge
Aitken, Robson
Ross, Nicholl
McMahon, Hamilton, Rioch
Graydon, Gray, Little

Subs
Cumbes (sorry never liked Spink even though he was heroic)
Alan Evans, Leighton Phillips
Carrodus
Lochhead, Shaw, Deehan

Bosnich

Staunton
Southgate
McGrath
Milner
Townsend

Barry
Carew
Benteke

There would be changes in different formations obviously. Honorable mentions to Mings, Taylor, Delaney, Neilson, Mellberg, Petrov, Daley, Merson, Dublin and Atkinson and of course Grealish who would certainly be involved in a different formation.
