Agree that we need to get Hause off and go 4-4-2 with Jack in the middle behind Samatta.

Merson got it right.

Stop Jack. You can leave the others. They are no danger.

Reading the comments we’re lucky to be only 1 behind. I’m off to walk the dog and when I look again I’m expecting that a half time bollocking will have had a positive effect. Villa to win the second half.

Anywhere, let's cheer up, we might improve second half and only be really bad.

Anyone notice Smith's body language  as they left the field. He really is a clueless chump.

Yes, hands in pockets, shrugging his shoulders and head down. Does he look remotely capable of motivating and organising the team? He's out of his depth.

Chuff me, this always happens when results are bad. Everyone starts micro-analysing every facial expression, every word of a post match interview and every bit of body language. What does someone who 'does have a clue' look like? If he was going mental on the touchline, would that show him to be somehow more competent? We've been appalling but let's concentrate on what's happening on the pitch.

It's typical Villa really.

Two fantastic late winners v Watford and Leicester. Anyone else would go on a nice long unbeaten run and pretty much secure safety e.g. Burnley.

Instead we're on for our third straight defeat with Leicester and Chelsea to come in next games.

I was being facetious, we won’t do anything of the sort with Smith in charge even if we kept all those players.

As easy as it is to lay the blame at Smith’s feet the players have to take some responsibility for that. Absolutely diabolical in every department. A disgrace to the shirt on that showing.

With the exception of Jack they're all his signings.

The lack of balance in Midfield is staggering, we have conceded 13 shots again in 45 minutes of football. Week after week its the same story and yet Dean just continues with the same shape. We have a whole set of coaches who game plan and review the film, why are they not analyzing where all the chances are coming from and shore up the midfield. They have so much time on the ball and we cannot string 3 passes together.

This is exactly the same as Bournemouth where we play a relegation rival and don't turn up, how can you fail to be motivated for these games. We are sleepwalking to relegation.

That's about as bad a half as we've played this season (and there's some competition for that accolade).  The only positive is that we're still only 1 down.  We need a marked improvement in the second half, hell, just a couple of shots on target would be nice!

While it remains 1-0 I suspect they'll start to drop back a bit and we might get a bit more possession in their half, but we just don't look like breaking them down (disallowed goal aside - which Samatta took well)

OptaJoe on Twitter

0 - Aston Villa failed to have a single attempt on goal in the first half against Southampton – the first time the Saints have prevented their opponents from having a shot in the opening 45 minutes of a Premier League game since April 2014, also against Aston Villa. Nullified.
