Surprised that Dean waxed lyrical about Southampton's home-form and that we'd be looking to take advantage of that. Isn't that what leads to the cliché opponents riposte post-game of "We pinned-up those quotes in the dressing room which gave us extra motivation to win" ?!

“We’d intended to play poorly but when we saw what Dean Smith had said we decided to try harder”.

By all accounts they lack our current work ethic. Soft, southern shandy drinking, lazy arses. They'll be up for the game, probably see us as 3 easy points. Their strength is catching teams on the counter attack. Ask them to build up anything and they run out of ideas and collapse, which is why their home form is so poor. It's obviously frustrated their fans as it had for us at Villa Park from most of this century.

Spurs never win away.
Saints never win at home.
Enter Aston Villa, available for parties, weddings, funerals, etc etc

Nice exaggeration. Of course players don't intend to play poorly but I can't have imagined post-match interviews in the past when a player/manager says they wanted to ram the words of the opposition down their throats etc. It's marginal gains at this level and finding new ways to motivate players is always welcomed by management. I'm not saying it will make a difference, just that it comes across as a tad naive from your cousin to talk about it the way he did.

I honestly don’t think it makes any material difference. It gets highlighted if a team win and can then point at the opposition manager’s words but it’s never mentioned when the result goes against them therefore making it seem as though it acts as a motivator.

3-0 to saints but only because when I vote a Villa win we lose so I’m hoping for the opposite
the only time I ever call it right is when we lose!

If Smith starts Drinkwater and we lose, then he deserves the sack.

Come on the Villa boys! We only have wet spam to play in the current bottom 6. We have only achieved 1 point against the high fliers. If we are to stay up we have to be collecting points (and preferably 3! ) from each of the mid-table teams like Soton. Let's do these today! UTV!

That’s a genuinely shocking stat when you consider how many good performances (and leads) we’ve had against those teams.
