He does, but it could be that Emery is looking for size.

I think we have to get real with the level of expectation around him

Maybe Emery just doesn’t rate him going on what he sees in training and neither did Gerrard? Neither of them have chosen to use him so maybe there’s a reason for that. Exactly as we said about Sanson and Guilbert, much more experienced players. Maybe Archer is just too raw.

It’s still a big jump from where he is now - the fringe of the first team - and playing regularly in the top flight. How long ago was that goal at Chelsea now? Why hasn’t he cracked on?

We haven’t got anything like enough evidence to suggest he’s better than Ings - a player with hundreds of top flight games under his belt.

It’s really really hard to come through as a youth team product to be a first or second choice striker at a premier league club, which is why so many drop a level or two and prove themselves there.

He’s gone to a good championship team now so will have a chance to prove the manager wrong.  I suspect he’ll do well enough there to get offered a permanent deal and take it.

He’s going to have much more chance of building a top flight career that way than he is not quite making the next step here.

I tend to agree, it's really difficult unless an injury happens and you grab the opportunity with both hands. The lad at Arsenal is a good example, he's turned himself from a fringe to a key player over the last few weeks, but you need that opportunity and it didn't come for him in the first half of this season.

Eddie Nketiah is 23. His chance didn’t just not come earlier this season, but in the last two or three seasons. He made his first team debut five years ago. He had one six month loan at Leeds in the championship. I hope Cam gets a proper chance with us before he’s 23, or that we let him go and develop properly elsewhere. We don’t need, and he doesn’t need, for him to be considered a “prospect” well into his twenties. It happened with Keinan, and I hope it doesn’t happen with Cam.

That said, Cam was loved at Preston, and has started really well at boro. I don’t think there is much doubt at this point that he can contribute at Championship level. The question now is whether he can do enough at a promotion chasing side to indicate he can do it at Prem level. I certainly hope so!

My guess he’s been sent out with a word in his ear and has a point to prove. These kind of performances and reviews will help and you know Emery will have his staff watching him closely. That Ings was usually on the bench and much more senior player obviously stifled Cam’s chances. But going forward, with the 5 subs rule even if we do sign another striker Cam will have his opportunity if keeps applying himself. His Villa career is far from over.

Hope so but the 5 subs rule barely saw him get a sniff in the first half of the season.
