He isn't a nailed in starter.
He's had 100+ games to show that he's indispensible, but we're none the wiser as to whether he's a 6, 8 or 10.
He wants to leave.
He hasn't signed a new contract, despite there being one on the table for some time.
£25m declined now.
How much will his value  have fallen to by January.

Having missed out 9n a move to Arsenal, what will his form be like on the coming months.

Think we've dropped one by keeping him.

We can't play £25m in cash in midfield, and I doubt it could score directly from corners. Although I'd consider giving it a start over McGinn.

With £25m in, say, 50p pieces, you could at least form some sort of protection in the middle of the park.

I wonder what denomination of coins would be most effective.

2p I reckon, 1.25bn of them and given they're more than double the size of a penny they'd be the most area covered.

Imagine how slow it'd be to change coin midfield shape, though, having to shift 1.25 billion coins.

It would be almost as slow as our actual midfield.

We play them next to McGinn who has a feet and shins made of them.

I think Arsenal trying to sneak a deal through that close to the wire made Villa dig their heels in. Available all summer, choosing deadline day was stupid. A week earlier he'd have likely gone and we would have loaned in a midfielder.

I'd agree with that.

Assuming their interest was genuine and they just weren't just trying to unsettle one of their rivals for the top 4. >:(

He needs game time and good performances to get back in the Brazil squad, so hopefully he’ll get his down with minimal fuss and force his way to becoming a regular starter. From the clubs perspective, I would expect them to make him an offer that he can’t refuse with at least a £50m release clause in his contract.

Signing a new contract for $1,000 would be very good business indeed.

He's been poor since 2020/21. Poor throughout last season and for me probably not deserving of an improved contract.

It baffled me to hear "pundits" going firm.in the loin at the prospect of him as a 6, as he's nowhere near mobile or strong enough to do it effectively.

On balance I'd have kept him, for the optics, but if they'd have come in for him earlier, I'd have got rid.

the pundits I heard say he'd have been good for Chelsea and Arsenal have never watched him play - absolute lazy talk - he's done nothing to suggest he can step it up a level, especially as a defensive midfielder.

I’m just glad we kept him because Arsenal, their supporters and their manager are massive thundercnuts.

Pretty much how I feel, especially the last para. Selling him in those circumstances would've given all the wrong signals.
