That sort of money can be a catalyst.  Pain now, but the “£40m replacement” will be fill the void eventually. And £24m can be used to pay off the bean counters.

These rules work on so many levels - my lad has finally got in to football after the World Cup.  I’ve kitted him out like a 1994 Aston Villa catelogue - but it’s a hard sell.

He probably shouldn't have used the emotive verb "dismantle", but I think there is some merit in his argument. We won a major European trophy and qualified for the CL and yet we are still minnows swimming in a sea of predators as far as the transfer market currently works.

Until rules changes are made, don't hold your breath, this is the situation of big fish eating little fish. In their position we would be doing exactly the same thing, targetting clubs below us for their best players. Of course we have been targeted because we have better players who have become valuable to them, they improve their squad and weaken ours at the same time. From the player perspective Konsa could stay at Villa with a bit more money thrown in or go to say Arsenal for a massive salary increase with a five year contract. Why should he? This continual moaning about the rules is tiresome. We know it’s unfair, we hear it day after day after day, and I’m as sick of it as SE. We are using player trading as one strategy to help bridge the gap. People may not like it but it’s one of the ways we get to be the club people want us to be. Why not get excited about Emery 2.0 than continually whinge about something we have absolutely no control over. I trust the owners implicitly in the strategy they’re following, it’s not happening quickly enough, it never does for Football fans, but we’re stretching the rules to breaking point to ensure we maintain momentum. I’m much more in tune with that than worrying about playing assets being bought and sold and Villa doing the very sensible thing of seeking to maximise value in the transfer market for their playing assets.

All of that said if we lost Konsa my view is that  losing a 4th first teamer would potentially be a step too far but I have to trust Unai and his team to replace him. And who’s to say we don’t end up with a better player for Unai’s system than Konsa? It’s a bit like the interminable Watkins arguments, I wouldn’t want to sell Ollie but if we got a cheaper player who fitted Unai’s profile/system better who are we to doubt the Manager?
