All along my thinking on this comes down to what Emery thinks of Kesler. If he thinks this year in the championship might be enough for KKH to come back and challenge then I can see why he'd make do for a year (and the same goes for Iroegbunam and Sinisalo). All through his career Emery has done a great job of creating space for youngsters to earn their place in his squad and I can't help but think that some of the decisions we see as slightly strange are because we're not looking as long-term as he is.

I think Kessler would have to oust Cash because they're both attack-minded right backs. Konsa gives him the option of someone in that position who's immense in one-on-ones, and  much more solid defensively. And from what I know of Villarreal, he likes having a centre back who plays at right back.

If Carlos-Pau becomes a first choice pairing, with Konsa as an option for full-back and we don't bring in a right back, then you would think we will need cover for Carlos, or someone else who could play either role.

It seems to me that our promising kids are going to be used more for FFP purposes than actual game time, unless any of them prove to be exceptional. Philogene did really well in pre-season, and had made arguably the strongest case for inclusion in the squad this season, but was still sold on.

Yeh that’s probably it. We will do what Man City, Chelsea etc do. Get stupid money from top kids. Only a few ever make it anyway. May as well hoover up the best of them in the area and use them to strengthen our overall financial position. And once in a while a JJ arrives or a Jack.

I cannot get over some of Konsa's footwork in recent games. The technique, distribution...compare and contrast to under Gerrard when his dribbling would make a toddler wince. And he would always play it square to Ty, abdicating responsibility for being progressive.

Now he can de-fend, he can off-end, he doesn't need to up-end cos of his positioning and physical strength. The man must be part of God's plan - McGrath is surely looking-on with admiration (well I know he is, he tweeted his pride in the club last night).

The bar's being raised all the time, so it's becoming harder to break into the team for a young player. City's system probably has more talent coming through than ours, and only the likes of Foden and Lewis have broken through. The others have had to move on. We'll be the same in that regard.

Man City and Chelsea have just been doing it for longer and it’s been a very defined policy of theirs. Make sense given how and how much they spend on new players. I want us to cast our net far and wide to all parts of the world. One of the reasons we’re are now setting up club affiliations so that we can find talent in different regions. It’s so positive what is happening because we are witnessing the formation of a star. Hopefully in a few years time, competing at the top end of the table, winning some competitions, operating as a CL club or at minimum Europa we can see us really stabilizing into a top European power again.

It’s really quite remarkable and I completely agree. I had seriously thought he had hit his ceiling. Where as with Dougie and Bailey and you could see they are extremely technically gifted, their form is not really a surprise, even though Bailey now looks world class, where as I often always believed Dougie had it in him.

Konsa always was a very good defender but what he has added to his game is incredible and now looks completely composed and as comfortable on the ball as Torres.
