Couple of things..at least for me..

I always thought he'd got off lightly this season and has never really been tested.
He couldn't defend. Ace riding on Jack's coattails, but anybody can do that.

Today he became a man. That's what I expected from a Villa left back and he had it in buckets. I've got a feeling it wasn't a one-off and he has finally matured to the be the player many thought he already was. He wasn't. But today he was invincible. Loved it. Long may it continue.

I can't talk for anyone else but I've defended him for a while because I could see him becoming this player if we were patient with him and worked in training on his defensive positioning. I found it very interesting in commentary today when they mentioned that we split the defensive dills as Mings/Targett and Hause/Cash instead of CBs and FBs. I'd never thought about how they'd done it but I've said a few times that we're defending better since the restart because the full backs haven't looked as isolated as they were this time last season.

I didn't envision him being this solid defensively - even when up to speed.

I pegged him more as a Steve Staunton-type (ver 1) - a left back not blessed with pace and who could be got at, but provided quality and attacking threat on the ball.

At both Southampton and Fulham he was seen as a more attacking fullback. We might see that again at some point. But with the way we're set up at the moment, he needs to be able to sit in, defend and be switched on for 90 minutes. He's shown he can adapt to the needs of the team. Long may it continue.

I've defended Taylor in the past from the finger pointers who failed to see Saint Mings was to blame on the left. Hause today owned the position but that's nothing to take away from Targett. He was brilliant.

He was superb yesterday. For me over the 90 mins he was our MOTM, but Watkins in the 2nd half was brilliant

He is a rock at the back, becoming a steal at the price we paid.

Hope he's back for Saturday, don't want Taylor anywhere near the starting 11. Such a liability.

Targett was one of those who got Covid.

Youd never have known considering how outstanding he was tonight!

Surely the most improved player in the squad? Just shows the importance of patience before judging a player.

Was he injured or just tired?

To be fair that's exactly the what people were saying about Matt Targett so you never know!
Most improved player award does go to Targett though.
