I felt a bit sorry for him after the red card was shown. It was clearly a moment (or two) of madness but I wonder how much frustration of the past 18 months came out in that reaction. And by all accounts, he's worked pretty hard during what must have been a pretty lonely time for him.

Any challenge on him by an opponent that he feels excessive has the understandable risk of triggering him and I wouldn't blame him after what that thug Mee did without punishment.

Maybe it had nothing to do with that and Villa are closely monitoring his rehab, but maybe that needs to be tweaked regarding the mental/psychological side now that he's back playing first team football and open to increasing amounts of competitive challenges from the opposition.

Sums up my thoughts as well.

I've only seen the butting incident not what led up to it but can only assume he was provoked by something he deemed as a potentially nasty tackle.  As others have intimated, what happened 18 months previously is on his mind.  It's 18 months he wont be getting back and he doesn't want to go there again.  He needs to work double hard in training now and save any of his hotheadedness for when we play Burnley next if Ben Mee happens to be playing. Preferably when we're about  4-0 up with about 15 minutes to go and we bring him on.

I laid in to Wes enough.  I understand why he is frustrated and on a short fuse, what a terrible 18 months he's had.  Personally I'd cut our losses but if the coaches thing he can contibute in the future then I hope they're right.  I'd be delighted to see him make it.  But if we go into the new season with just Watkins & Wes/Keinan, then it's absolutely criminal.

Is he better than Davies? We paid 22m for him, but I cannot see how is is worth that much. I hope he proves me wrong but we need another striker.
No, I don't think he is.  But I'm also prepared to accept that prior to injury he only really had a handfull of games to prove himself as a relative youngster in a new league.  I don't expect much, but can see why the club don't want to write off the £22m.  I'm not holding my breath though.

He’d scored 5 times in 21 league games in the season before his injury, that alone puts him above Davis in terms of contributing to the team.

No there was nothing in the challenge, just a tussle for the ball and Wes probably comtted the first foul.  Both players just fronted up after, and it escalated out of nowhere.

Something must have been said to get him fired up the way he was.
As Chris said, it was a nothing challenge.

As I recall, Wes was probably having his best game for us against Burnley. There is a player in there.

Perhaps he was finding the game more difficult than expected against pretty poor opposition, and his frustration overcame him. No excuse for butting though.

It was hardly a butt yes it was a red card but it wasn't an assault.

I don't expect a statement from a player when they get sent off, even less so in a pre-season game.  This demand for statements is a bit odd in my book.

It's not a demand for a statement it's that I'm half expecting something because ...

Something must have been said to get him fired up the way he was.
As Chris said, it was a nothing challenge.

I might be wrong but how angry he was in his reaction looked a lot more like someone who just been insulted/abused than someone who's just had a tussle for the ball.

I hope I'm wrong and that it was just red mist as the aftermath of the Mee foul as some have suggested, the alternative is a lot more depressing.

Dion set the standard for what a proper head Butt is on the pitch
That wasn’t anywhere near as proper

Dublin hardly touched Gobby Cabbage - assuming that is the head butt you are referring to.

How does a red card in a friendly work, does it rule him out of the next couple of friendlies ?
Still plenty of time left but we should not consider going into the season without an additional cover for Ollie. but I guess the club know that (he hopes)

This means our other non scoring forward is going to be here right up until the deadline if Wes gets a 3 game ban.

If we don't sign another forward I'd be keeping Keinan for the season whether Wes looks fit or not.  I accept it's not good for his career and a loan could do him the world of good, but in the here and now our forward options aren't deep enough to let him go.
