We can, a bit. Some seasons you can get lucky and stay up with a much lower points total than the one we look likely to require.

Why couldn't the top four have been an inconsistent bunch of seatsniffers when we were trying to get in there?

I canít be arsed to do the research but out of nearly 30 years of the premier league how many that have finished 17th have stopped up on 35/36 points. Not many

As of two years ago, and excluding the 42 game seasons of the early years, 35.8 points was the average points total of the team finishing 18th in the Premier League. So 36 points would be enough to keep you up more often than not.

https://www.premierleague.com/news/648900

In the two seasons since, the third bottom teams have managed 33 and 34 points.

So, on average, we would be unlucky to go down on 36. There have been a higher than usual number of upsets in the league.

Tl;dr quick summary: Leicester, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham are c***s.

Think positive, puts pressure on Watford and West Ham again for their Friday match.

Yes but who do we want to win that game ?

West Ham.

Yes we want them safe before we play them.

Definitely West Ham

I disagree. We have control over West Ham's last fixture which we don't with Watford. Better to be in striking distance so we're not relying on others.

West Ham safe. Nothing to play for. We need a win. Everything to play for. So West Ham for me vs Watford. As long as we beat Everton of course. Yes, I know I am clutching at straws.

We have to win two out of three. One of those is highly likely to be West Ham. Why would we want the chance that we win but so do Watford so we still go down? I know all of this is hypothetical and we don't get a choice but surely a win is a guarantee of staying up is the best option here?

I'd rather we're facing a team that are shitting themselves at the prospect of playing us than one 'free to go out and express themselves'.

Draw for me regarding West Ham and Watford..West Ham away at Man Utd the game after, Watford at home to Man City, providing we take 4 points from our next 2 games it could be back in our hands...I'd rather play West Ham feeling the pressure of needing something against us, rather than be relaxed against us..

Like many have said. Happy to take it one game at a time and Thursday is certainly our biggest game of the season. Win that and the team start believing and then suddenly that West Ham v Watford game looks massive for both sides.

Bournemouth are a horrible scrappy team that play an ugly aggressive brand of football.
They seem to get a lot of luck to go with it.

Leicester were cruising at 1-0 and Bournemouth looked gone.  Schmeichel made a howler and Leicester just imploded.  Couldn't really believe what I was watching.

Man City back in Europe which is good for us. Hopefully they won't ease up as they still have Bournemouth and Watford to play. Also the rule is fucking shit anyway so glad to see it undermined. Bodes well for us if anyone tries to punish us for having ambition, too.

I still think a West Ham win is best regardless of what we do at Everton. If we beat Everton and West Ham beat Watford we may well only need two points from our final two games, one of which against a West Ham side that may well be already safe. Because of our goal difference, if we lose to Everton we'll definitely need to win our last two games - if West Ham beat Waford then we'll finish above them if we win our final two, providing Watford get less than two points from Man City at home and Arsenal away.

I'd discounted Bournemouth, which was stupid. If we assume they beat Southampton at home and lose to Man City away, then we'll probably need Everton to do us a favour and get something against them on the last day of the season.

Actually just because 35.8 is the average points (and by that I assume you refer to the mean) this doesn't mean you stay up more often than not, that would be the median.
