I agree. When we have a team full of players like Xavi, Iniesta and Messi, which I expect to happen in the next couple of years, by all means give it a go.

Until then, lump it in and tell Mings to shove his head at it.

I thought they were a useful tactic last night, given the ability in the air of the defence we were up against. It's clear that the aim is to get Jack on the ball inside the box, where they are afraid to tackle him for fear of giving away a penalty.

I think, on the whole, that was specifically to deal with tall Albion defenders and not an ongoing strategy

I really hate them. Fair enough when the oppostion is unawares, but when they are expecting them you just invite pressure and run the risk of losing possession in a dangerous area.

Quite agree.  Way too many heart in the mouth moments as a result of them.

Absolutely. They are solid in defence and concede little from corners. I think it's a good tactic to start with.

Maybe, but after you could see it wasn't working there was no need to continue. And it's not like Mings and Abraham are incapable of winning a header against a tall player.

Maybe they should practice them a bit more then, because I may be misremembering, but every single one was shit.

In any case, central defenders being tall is hardly a new phenomenon surely.

Seems from early on in the first we decided their man mountains of Bartley, Dawson and Hegazi were impossible to win a header against.

I agree it was odd to do it on every short corner, teams tend to do it once every five corners, we were doing it 4 out of 5.

We didn't score from one so it didn't work.

Albion are particularly good at defending them, better to play short and hopefully we pull them out of position so they are less effective. That we can't provide a decent cross from playing it short is another point.

They're not, SHA scored twice against them from set pieces in April.

Pretty sure Johnstone has also flapped at a few inswinging corners this season.

I love em because Tammy is not a very good target man and the long kicks just gave them the ball. We absolutely must play out from defense they way were set up. But yes it was a bit squeaky bum time.

Re short goal kicks - we won't stop doing them , it's the basis of how Smith wants to play out from the back. Plus when we lumped it up I don't think we won many and even then the ball didn't stick.

Short corners - when we do them as a variation to catch them by surprise they might work well. When they are the norm they're easy to defend - I'd like to see a good inswinger to be attacked, or even the old near post flick on
