A very fine player and captain, his signing from Liverpool was quite something at the time for a club in the third division, and he did not disappoint.

It is hard to imagine your heroes dying, he was certainly one of mine.
Always seemed a modest guy, I have a cutting from him joining us from Liverpool, us at the time attracting players from them seemed a portent of the future.
God bless My Captain

RIP Ian Ross. Condolences to the family. I will always remember that match vs Sunderland in 1975 when Ian scored a pen in the 2-0 win in front of 58k. As a young holte-ender I got separated from my dad because of the crowds. I met up with him again in the trinity road stand with the help of the police and ended up watching the match on the Witton End stand amongst the Villa and Sunderland fans. I can remember my dad drinking champagne which had been offered to him by the celebrating Villa fans after Ian's goal. Thanks for the memories.

Wow what a shock. I got to meet Ian here in Australia many years ago, I think he was coaching with Wolves and they were here on a pre-season tour.
Such a nice bloke I told him I was a Villa fan and we talked about the 1975 League Cup win.
What a leap of faith joining us from Liverpool when we were just out of Division 3.

Remember sitting next to him and Gordon Smith at Highbury when we thumped QPR 3-0 (Sir Brian hat-trick) in the second semi final replay. Cultured player and great captain.

Very sad news one of my favourite players, as others have said he was one of the Villa captains to have lifted a Cup at Wembley. RIP Ian

Somber news indeed. He was a rare classy player. Memories of my first trip to Wembley in '75 are now a little sadder.
