If he heads the ball away from goal, they don’t score.

He did head the ball away from goal.

It was a shit decision to drop Hause. Mings has always got a match-changing error in him, and so it proved yet again.  I didn't see much of his supposed Baresi-esque distribution either that makes him so much better than Hause.

Agree that dropping Hause was wrong but I don't think Ming's did too much wrong for their goal. He was unlucky his header bounced straight off Martial and in.

Mings is a better player than Hause that’s why Hause was dropped.  I think it’s extremely harsh a portioning blame on him for the goal. It was a fortunate goal for Martial.

Mings is the senior  player,a current England International and will always be selected ahead of Hause.

Martial is behind Mings when he heads it, maybe look at the replay.

Yeah, I don’t think the goal can be purely put down to Mings. He got to cut the near post out otherwise there is potentially a tap in for the striker. It’s as much on Konsa, who is in a much better position to actually see Martial, as it is Mings in my opinion.

Also, again just my opinion, but Mings gets back in because he is a better defender than Hause. And has better leader and organisional qualities. Hause has been good, and can certainly feel a tad unfortunate,  but it’s not like our defence has been poor in it with Mings this season.

Mings has been at fault for numerous goals this season including last night. He is yet to play consistently well in the top division really. He isnt even the best centre half at the club anymore and should be under serious pressure for his place at this stage. Hause did nothing wrong in his recent stint in the side, granted the likes of Burnley, West Brom or Palace werent the most taxing of nights, but no unforced errors.

The fact Mings is anywhere near the English national side says more about the paucity of options available than his talents.

He’s also done a lot of very good things. His errors certainly stand out and more so for a defender. Last night we could also question where Targett was or why nobody else picked up Martial’s run. It wasn’t all Mings’ fault.

Good points.

El Ghazi didn’t track back, Targett got done by the clever Rashford flick, Tyrone got done by the flight of the ball and Konsa wasn’t tracking Martial.  Blaming Mings is scapegoating of the highest order. It was a soft goal all round.

Does he head it towards the net?

Surprised you didn't mention McGinn letting Pogba chip the ball over him in midfield to start the move...

It wasn't Cafu that skated down our wing though, it was the bang average AWB who can't cross a decent ball to save himself. There is one forward in the box. Mings is in a decent starting position at the front post but instead of opening out his body for a routine clearance with his right foot, he tries a circus act of a header which he makes a mess of and costs us a goal. At the root of this is once again his complete inability to trust using his right side. It's the reason he won't ever be a top defender, he is as one sided as Conor Hourihane is. Most of his mistakes are down to the lack of trust he has on using his right foot to even clear the ball, not to mind using his foot he isn't even comfortable turning his body onto his right side, it's like he loses balance when he tries. That's not easily fixable.

So the ball played at head hight is a routine clearance with his right boot?

There is no way he is clearing that ball with his boot, that's just nonsense.

Bronte, if you seriously think Mings should have 'opened out his body and cleared that with his boot' then I really just dont know what to say. As for Pogba flicking  the ball over McGinn, what's that go to do with anything? It was a lovely piece of skill but you've seen it as another thing to find fault with. I don't get it. You seem to struggle more than most  when we lose games.

What has Konsa done wrong there? He did track Martial, but then his defensive partner headed the ball straight at Martial rather than up in the air or out for a corner.  What else could he have done?

Challenged the free header?
