I wasn't at the game itself, but on avtv it sounded a decent atmosphere, and friends and family (including my mum, who hasn't been since about 2004!) who went, confirmed this.

When you say the atmosphere was shit, Quinton, what do you actually mean? And on the other side of things, what, for you, would a great atmosphere be like?

Anything less than Dortmund's Yellow Wall is simply shit.

Big 3 points and rare for us to get a new manager bounce in the first game.

Some positive signs and enjoyed seeing us press high up the pitch. I think he will work on our fitness as we visibly tire towards the end of every game.

Shit atmosphere apart from the start and for the goal, but it nearly always is down the Villa these days. Great attendance though, two good results away from home next week should hopefully see 35k+ against Bolton which would be a great crowd for a Friday night game.

Can't wait to see how he sets us up away from home. Exciting times.

You certainly seem to revel in slagging off our support. You must be loving this - 42,000 people to criticise today. Was the singing poor again? Did you sing? Have you joined a choir yet?

It's probably best to ignore the daft Leeds twat.

Why bother?
If you’re from Birmingham and support Leeds, really, why bother?

I fucking hate Leeds, by the way.

Haha. I was in it for the Germany Poland World Cup game in 2006, and although great, it was no Holte End in full voice. But I get your point!

Good to great performances by Chester Barney  SJM Nyland Abraham, thought Tuzanbee was promising.
We created enough to win by more and messed up the final pass too many times.
We looked like we had been actually coached and were trying to play to a pattern and shape.
It felt like a very important day for Aston Villa in so many ways.
The most important thing is our new manager got the win.
UTV.

Who'd have thought that pressing with a front three, making attacking subs, setting traps in midfield and playing on the front foot to see our a lead, would all work against championship quality teams?

Also thought that our patient play in defence brought Swansea out a bit and allowed us to create space

Loads more to work on. Some of the passing was sloppy. And thereell be games where teams sit in and play long and those tactics won't work. But I really enjoyed it

What happened to James Bree? By all accounts our best player at Millwall. Not even on the bench, yet Whelan was? I'd like to see Callum O'Hare on the bench instead of Whelan.

We did not have a best player at Millwall.  We had a troupe of auditioners for Santa's grotto.

Not perfect by any stretch, but we won and looked more like a team than we have all season.  If he gets that out of them after a few days I am very hopeful for the rest of the season.  Think Swansea will be top 6 too, so given the amount of absolute sitters we missed, it was a good win.  Amazing turnout too, underlines the potential of the club.

I must admit I didn't think it was a great atmosphere considering the size of the crowd. I think a lot of people were waiting for the equaliser and there was a lot of nerves around. This is splitting hairs though, great turnout, folks voting with their feet in support of the new management. Long may it continue.

Clearly no room for old legs now even though Whelan and Jedi were on the bench

Forgot Abraham actually played for Swansea, law of the ex and all that.

The 11 wasn't that much different to what SB was selecting, AEM still playing in midfield, just one out and out wide player so just interesting if we were on the front foot much more today in terms of tempo and pace?

Good win anyway against a team that recently drew 0-0 at Boro and won 2-1 at Sheff United, the current top 2.

I think for the first time down here we're really seeing how competitive this division can be. A 7 point gap between 1st to us in the bottom half is quite incredible given we're nearly a third of the way through the season.

I'd safely say it will be less points to get promoted in 2nd this season than last given how bunched up everyone is. Key now we can string a few wins together as that will do wonders for our prospects before the tough December run.

We'll be fully cooking on gas come December, those supposedly tricky teams will be lining up to take the beatings we will hand out.

And they will be grateful for it.
Steady on

A good start for Smith and a welcome three points, even if we made hard work of it but don't we always?

sorry lads not being too pedantic here but i meant the championship

in the olden days football crowds were alot different . most crowds were standing

think our record attendance was 58,000 back in the 50's for example

just looked on google your record attendance was 76,000 in the 40's but i guess that was division 1 back then !

where did they all fit in at villa park -lol
The old Holte End terrace held over 28,000 alone. And there would have been probably 30,000  in there for the record gate v Derby.
