Needs the arse to be able to do it though, both of which McGinn and Barry had.

Last player out of the ground in Saturday and spent a lot of time chatting to the waiting supporters.

He's a top bloke. Chatted to my lad about the fact he was wearing shorts in the freezing cold, just like him apparently. There were kids there cheering and shouting as they'd got his autograph and met him. Was lovely to see and frankly you could tell McGinn just gets it.

He's a great lad. I thought Gareth Barry was always a certain pick in our best X1 of last 25-30 years but think McGinn has passed him out over last 12-18 months. Both used their arse/hips to great advantage. Likes of Rogers still needs to learn how to do it.

Think Barry was a better player, but think John McGinn will go down as a proper club legend type of figure.  His story is a great one really in terms of where he started his career and where he's ended up.

Its mad to think mcginns been here 7 years in august. Thats real loyalty he has shown here

Wouldn't  suprise me if in a couple years he wants to go celtic to finish  his career.

If he were to finish his PL career with us, I think he'd be close to my favourite player in my time as a supporter. Especially if he were to captain us to a trophy.

I love (good) players who spend all of their peak years with us, and SJM symbolises our 'rebirth' to me. He's been here the whole way.

I wouldn't state loyalty as I don't remember any offers from teams better then us  or who might have offered him terms better then us. What it has shown is that he will raise his game to match the level we are at which for a player bought in at Championship level, is something for him to be proud of. He just needs to add some league goals this year though.....  :D

I agree Rory. Ive been going down since the early 80s and its getting to the stage, where i don’t remember a player I have more affinity with. If we win something with him as skipper, it would mean so much more. Doesn’t always play well, but he’s our heartbeat

For all the chances we created on Sat he had a poor game but last night he was brilliant.

When he plays well we do.

I think you're a year or two older than me but I still have a reverence for those that got us back up in '88, far and beyond much better players that subsequently followed them.

McGinn is unique as he falls into that category and is also captain of arguably the best side I've seen in that time.

Completely  agree mate. Certainly  on road to legendary  status in my eyes. Another 3 years or so and he will be entitled to a testimonial

Ddid anyone notice him & his interaction with both mascots yesterday?
He really is a credit to himself & the club shirt.

Villa mascot was in a wheelchair, which Mcginn happily pushed to the centre circle.
Chelsea mascot was left in the centre circle by Chelsea captain.

Mcginn never left either alone & played ball with both until it was time to kick off.

Super John Mcginn

All our mascots yesterday were from the Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Quote
If you're at Villa Park today or tuning into today's match against Chelsea on TV, keep your eyes peeled for nine very special people who will be making an appearance.

Thanks to @avfcofficial and @AVFCFoundation, nine of our patients will walk out onto the pitch alongside the players as mascots!

Six-year-old Max, 11-year-olds Alex, Esmay and Tayshelice and 12-year-olds Alfie, Charlie, Vinnie, Oliver and Jenson are all massive Villa fans, and that's not all they have in common. Each of them have spent long periods of their young lives in and out of our hospital and for many of them it’s become their second home.

We are so thrilled to be able to offer them this experience, fulfilling a bucket list dream for them all.

I too clocked McGinn with the mascots - Top, top bloke. Meanwhile Reece James just dumped the little girl in the Chelsea kit.

Nice touch that they were all from the BCH too - Puts everything into perspective. Seeing poorly kids makes you realise how insignificant our moans about a football team truly are.

He’s a brilliant captain for us, such a great lad to have.

I saw an interview the other day, he was talking about a period when his stock was so low here but Emery still believed in him. It made me think, when Gerrard was here I was convinced McGinn wasn’t good enough anymore myself. It just shows when you have a decent manager you really have to have faith in them.

I then went back through this thread and noticed he’s had a few wobbles while here, adjusting to the Premier was one, that first season we struggled and there was quite a few questions regarding him. I’m so glad he’s stayed here because there was lots of talk around 2020 for him to move one.

It’s a real testament to McGinn how even now he’s still the heartbeat to our team and when his form dips, it’s so noticeable in the way we play. What a player he’s been for us.
