Yes we definitely need to increase the goals from all areas.

I think we're starting to see this happening, midfielders are actually appearing in the opposition box now as opposed to covering the full backs

Yep, though i think that's at odds with the manager's philosophy to be fair.

Martinez went up for a corner and the manager has been clear he doesn't want it happening again.

While we’re on the subject of McGinn scoring most of his international goals against “soft” opponents…..

I’m assuming these stats are correct….

A number of his penalties were against the sides listed.

You can probably break down Messi's or Ronaldo's international goals and a very small number will be against top sides.

A quick look and you're right. Ronaldo's got 11 against Luxembourg, 7 against Lithuania, 6 against Andorra. His only "top tier" goals are:

Argentina - 1
Belgium - 3
France - 2
Germany - 1
Spain - 3

And he's never scored against England, the shit bastard.

That's the nature of international football these days I guess.

The commentator the other night said most of Booby Charlton's were against farmers and postmen, or words to that effect.

I think I remember a stat that Ronaldo has never scored a goal in the World Cup knock out stages.

Yeah, I asked him if he was counting some goals twice.

49 goals.
22 in friendlies.
16 the Home Championships*.
6 in other* qualifiers (5 against Luxembourg WC, 1 against Spain EC).
5 in tournaments (4WC, 1EC)

* There's an overlap of 3 goals when the HC was deemed a qualifying group.

I'm saying nothing.

Ha ha, very good.
I've not followed but just skimmed through and seen this so I'm a bit nonplussed but YES or NO as the case may be. I'm working so you'll have to point me to it later. Ta! :-)

Yup, I remember there being a lot of pant-wetting when Rooney broke Sir Booby's record about how it didn't mean anything due to the opponents Rooney scored against. From people assuming in the '60s every international match was the equivalent of a World Cup final.

That World Cup qualifiers one is eyebrow raising. 5 against Luxembourg, and that's it.

In fairness to him we didn't play any for the 1966 or 1970 World Cups.

And his 4 hat-tricks came in friendlies we won 8-1 vs USA, 8-0 vs Mexico & 8-1 vs Switzerland, plus 3 of his Luxembourg goals came in a 9-0 win.
