For all the criticism of McGinn's appointment, and what he does and doesn't bring to the role, not one of us sees him in the changing room before and during games. Not one of us sees him on the training pitch day in day out. Not one of us watches him engaging with his teammates one-on-one when things are going well or badly.

It might turn out to be a terrible appointment, but there is little reason to believe it was done for any other reason other than "he was the best candidate for the job" based on the above observations of the management team.

People were slamming Mings last season, insisting we needed an upgrade in defence, or that he had to improve.  So if he's NOT the captain, who realistically could it otherwise be?  Assuming you don't want a keeper as your on-field captain.

First and foremost he has to put in better performances for the team, because if he doesn't, he'll get dropped.  We know he's capable of better. We've seen it. Some players need a bollocking, some players need an arm around them.  Some thrive with responsibility, some shrink from it.  If Gerrard thinks this is the way to get the best out of him, then great, I'm willing to give it time to see.

Agree with this. I went through the team and no other candidates really stood out apart from Emi.

Anyway it's 4 years to the day since he signed for us. Seems much longer but another reminder that we've come a long way in a relatively short space of time.

McGinn being Captain after his last 18 months is frankly speaking laughable. Objectively speaking.
Thre's nothing objective about that comment.

We have. Our current Steve Bruce speaks very well and is enviably slender.

We will never get the balance right whilst his place is guaranteed and making him Captain only enforces it and makes it look a terrible decision.
I have nothing against mcginn personally its just that he is not consistently good enough at this level.

It comes to something when we will be almost hoping he has an injury or suspension just to get him out. I really hope it does not come to that.

With captaincy comes responsibility. A captain should act as some kind of bridge between the players and the coaching staff/management. So when is McGinn going to step up to the plate. Mings was supportive of him when he got given the captaincy. When is he going to return the same level of support and not just regarding Mings, but also Traore, Guilbert, Nakamba, Sanson and maybe others.
He's been very quiet as captain since last weekend's debacle or is it that he's quiet because he's just another "yes" man?

Maybe he should do a daily podcast.

I'm not a fan of McGinn at all, but it's been one match. And you don't know what's going on behind the scenes. Anyway, he's there to gee up the troops on the pitch, not act as a union spokesman.

Agreed, it's only been one game but it's refreshing to see someone accusing McGinn of not stepping up to a plate.

Maybe it's already been emptied!
Union spokesperson uuh?
I may be doing McGinn a disservice. Maybe he's already had a chat with the boss, but he in his infinite misguided wisdom has decided not to listen.
McGinn is probably a great lad to party with, but seriously  captain material no matter how many games? ...No way!
