Hugh Johns I associate with the delicious smell of roast lamb and mint sauce.

Hugh Johns and Star Soccer. Not just for his Villa commentaries but his Midlands work in general. 'Big Peter Withe', 'Sid Cowans', 'Pop Robson', 'Big Larry Lloyd', 'Wee Archie Gemmill'. He was also the forgotten commentator of the 1966 World Cup final on ITV as people only remember Kenneth Wolstenholme's famous words on the BBC. Obviously George Gavin's radio work for BRMB, particularly from 1980 to 1982 as well.
yes he the forgotten commentator of the 66 final, their footage is rare and hardly ever shown.

Brian Moore - the best. His 1975 League Cup final commentary was exemplary. And, of course, the iconic commentary from the '82 European Cup win....

As Brian Moore was on the London-based the Big Match I always saw him as a pro London teams man. Rotterdam was a very pleasant exception, mind.

The guy who commentates on the SKY championship games seems pretty clued up on us.  Has he got a Villa connection?

Yep. He always reminds me of childhood Sunday afternoons in the 70s. Great days!

As an aside, a bit miffed to hear Barry Davies doing the narration to the “Motty” special on BBC 1, when Motson wasn’t fit to lace the boots of Davies as a commentator. He was the best ever in my opinion.

I agree. Davies added to the sense of occasion, Motson irritated me in the way someone on their own with a transistor radio used to back in the day.

Hugh Johns, Star Soccer was better than MOTD and as soon as I hear his voice it reminds me of being 8 and eating Sunday dinner.

Space 1999, Star Soccer, CHiPs and The Return Of The Saint. And as Flamingo Lane has already said, the smell of your mum cooking Sunday dinner in the background. The only downer was having to go to church. Especially if you had to go to the late afternoon/early evening service rather than getting it out of the way 'early doors' by going to the morning service. Although once a month my grandad used to come round for Sunday dinner and as he only had one leg and was wheelchair bound it meant that not only did he always bring me a bar of Cadbury's dairy milk chocolate but it also meant we didn't have to go to church when he was visiting.

Rush down Sunday dinner and get the best seat for Star Soccer. The theme tune was fantastic too.

I think it was ITV4 that used to show repeats of 'The Big Match', London's version of 'Star Soccer' a few years ago. I recall seeing Peter Withe playing for Newcastle against Charlton in the second division and Graham Taylor's Watford playing a crucial third division promotion six pointer away to Brentford. Also, any time I see football footage involving SGT's Watford side I can't help thinking that once he got them promoted from the fourth division to the first division the least they could have done was build the bloke a dug out.
