I thought, with the signings of McMahon and Rideout we'd be able to continue at or near the top. After this game I buggered off to the States and it had all fallen apart by the time we came back.

As an aside, what an initial pass from Gibson for the first - a lovely through ball with check that enabled Six to reach it, great cross...then foregone conclusion!

Rumour has it that McMahon only came to us because he couldn't go directly from Everton to Liverpool

And yes what a kit, a personal favourite. Great to see Birchy playing too.

Agreed
Go on admit it, it was the shorts, wasnt it?

Great  vid - wished McMahon had committed himself to the Villa properly, we were still a force on our day, worrying how quickly we fell apart as a  club in the mid  80's.

One other point this was probably the last period when to me our rivalry with the Mancs was stronger than against Small Heath.

I was at the game, age 10.  Pretty sure there was a Quo concert at the NEC the same night that I went to as well.

It was certainly a memorable debut from Six. He made a right mug out of United and England right back Mike Duxbury that day.
Sadly he never came close to playing that well for us ever again.

That was a cracking Christmas holiday - we beat Arsenal a few days later as well - the start of our challenge for the title - just think we came within a whisker of winning the league twice in three years.

Nearly relegated, relegated, promoted, nearly relegated, nearly champions, nearly relegated, 7th, nearly champions, 10th, nearly relegated, 4th. We weren't known for our consistency back then!

And we went to (a shit) Chelsea on New Years day and beat them - Daley scoring a trademark solo goal. What a day that was.

I was at the Man U and Arsenal games but flew back to Paris early evening on NYD so missed Chelsea. I found out our score from somebody at Heathrow. IIRC it was also the day Denis Bailey (?) scored a hat trick for QPR at Old Trafford.

Can't have been - I was at Chelsea for this game but I also remember watching Dennis bailey's hat trick live on TV

Cheers for that. Confusing my NYD flights back to Paris!
