He was injured, taken ill and then wanted to leave when the opportunity arose. But thst doesn't fit the narrative.

I think the most important bit is the mention of AFCON. That meant he started pre-season late and then just never caught up with the squad for a few reasons. I don't see anything all that controversial in the entire quote.

The response of 'but the whole squad are unfit' is both entirely expected and, in my opinion, the sort of easy option to slag off the manager that comes out any time a team isn't playing as well as the fans want.

DS not pulling his punches:

Dean Smith: “Why was Kodjia sold? Because he wasn't up to the standard, in my opinion. He hadn't got to the level of fitness that, for me, was required for the Premier League. That's the minimum standard to play Premier League football.” [birmingham live] #avfc

I must say that's pretty fucking ironic coming from a man who insists on playing a clearly unfit and out of his depth Danny Drinkwater in order to, eventually, at some point, maybe, get him match fit for another club.

That, too.

And from a man who has not yet proved himself to be premier league standard.

The safest option, saying nothing, is not generally available so the next safest is saying fitness issue.
Kodjia was up to premier league standard ability wise and skill level fine.

I don't care what the narrative was or is,
for me he was the weakest member of the squad and has now quite rightly been moved on

I'm glad I don't have to listen to that commentator every week.
