Football League Cup - Luton (A)
« on: June 08, 2016, 03:31:38 PM »
When is the draw for the Football League Cup? Last year the 1st Round was drawn on the 15th June I think and we're in it this year from the start.

70 teams in the first round, to be played the week commencing 8th August. Imagine the top 35 teams will be seeded.

Pretty sure the 2nd Round is always seeded, so I just assumed the 1st Round was as well. Could be wrong though.

Hoping to get a team I haven't seen before, someone like Accrington Stanley.

That happened to Hull last year:

ALL three clubs relegated from the Premier League face away trips in the Capital One Cup first round

My only worry is that if we lost we'd be hearing "Accrington Stanley, oo are dey? Exactly" for months.

The 1st Rnd draw is usually out the day before the fixtures, so it should be 21st June.
Hopefully away, let's save the game included with season tickets until the semi-final!

It was 72 teams last season according  to adrenachrome's link

Last year England had an extra place in Europe as West Ham qualified via the Fair Play nonsense.

This year England has the standard seven teams in Europe, all of whom receive a bye to the last thirty-two (Round Three).

That leaves twenty-five places up for grabs in R3 which means R2 must comprise fifty clubs.

This, in turn, means that Round One includes 70, rather than 72, clubs.

The two highest-finishing teams based on last season's placings join the remaining Premier League teams in Round Two. These are Newcastle and Norwich who finished 18th and 19th in last year's top flight.

We enter in Round One where we will be seeded along with the 21 remaining Championship clubs, the three clubs relegated to League One and all the teams that finished in the top thirteen of last season's League One.

Should we progress, we will be seeded in Round Two along with all the Premier League teams not in Europe, Newcastle, Norwich and the nine best-ranked Round One winners based on last season's table.

There. What could be simpler?

Fascinating fact 1: we have never lost in the First Round of the League Cup.

Fascinating fact 2: in every single promotion season we have always beaten at least one top flight club in a cup competition.
