We stayed in the Intercontinental Hotel in St George's last year and the Le Meridien in St Julien's the time before.  Very touristy both but enjoyable.  As Malta is only about sixteen miles long (ideal for Jon Croft for training) we got out into the countryside a bit.  Buses dirt cheap €1.50 for a day ticket and we managed to eat quite reasonably.  If I had one critisism it would be that Malta can be quite littered.

Of all the places we've been, Malta is the one place Mrs S considers to be her favourite.  Not a bad testimony given that lady!  The last day of our holiday last year, we went up to St Paul's where I saw a billboard advertising the following:  Pint of Heineken €2.00, three pints of Heineken €4 and I think it said six pints for a fiver.  I took a photo of it to show the owner of the boozer back here.  There were plenty of places advertising full Irish/English breakfast for €3.50.  The full Irish in this town here is €9.95.  Above all, the Maltese people are lovely.  Those we met anyway.

I think Malta is great and i really enjoyed Paceville when there were a big group of us over.  Can still get a pint for €1-1.50 by qawra and bugibba so long as you drink the local stuff (cisk), which is ok for the price.

Well that's it for today on Wish You Were Here, next week we'll be looking at exiting new destinations for next season including Ipswich, Rotherham and Sheffield.

Are all buses on Malta from the 1930's and driven by complete maniacs? I went on one from Sliema to Mellieha and the bus had all the windows open, dust and debris flying through it like shrapnel and driving on the wrong side of the road pretty much round blind bends nearly hitting other cars numerous times. On the return journey another driver pretty much told the woman sitting behind him to shut the fuck up, with her bursting out in tears and sobbing for the rest of the journey. Maybe it was just a bad day on the buses.

Maltese buses are modern and, the ones we traveled on were driven by pleasant men and women who were up for a laugh.  They can be pretty full mind.

A random aside, but I have family that live in Malta and used to be in the hotel game in Sliema. Why the fuck have I not conjured a holiday out of this before?

If you can still get a pint for €1-1.50 I would love to know where! A small bottle for 1.50 in a local bar in the south or towards Qawra maybe, but not a pint. Rent prices have risen 35-40% in the year I was away in this area too. I am amazed that so many people seem to know this funny little island mind! As someone said earlier, is scruffy, can be frustrating, customer service often leaves a lot to be desired but it's a charming place and I haven't regretted my drunken, random decision to move here at all over the years.

Haha, they certainly were but they replaced the old hummer style buses with a new fleet in 2011. They got a few bendy buses but they either got struck in the ridiculously tight streets or kept catching fire. No surprised that things didn't go to plan here.

Maltese bus drivers are amongst the most miserable people I have ever met, although I did see one who steered the bus using his gut once. That was quite impressive.

It's been a year since I last went so might have changed but I paid that in most of the bars my parents go to.

Must have scouted some Maltese kid by now. they're a bit soft-centred though.
