I think those 3 in behind Ayew may see the best from him too. Down the middle and more able to play on the shoulder of the last man than wide right.

You see I'm still not convinced just playing two central midfielders, it's been a bug bearer of mine ever since the MON days although back then the formation was very rigid and inflexible.

But how many games could we dominate just playing two in there, maybe Sunderland and some of the weaker teams at home but I think it's best to stick to 4-3-3 away.

It's not like we had great control of the Bournemouth game but we stuck in there

If Gil and Grealish are both in the team there would be no problems with keeping possession and controlling the game that way, even with a midfield two. Just that I'm not quite sure if it would work out defensively, even though Sanchez and Gueye are both supposed to be good in that area.

He did look good,as you would expect. But it was the understanding between Gil and Grealish that impressed me. They work well together.

I know this has probably been discussed else where, but Gil looked good from what I saw of him and the goal in the cup he scored was fantastic. I could never understand why he didn't feature at all towards the end of last season. Anyone got any ideas?

Sherwood thought he was not physical enough for a relegation battle. He was probably right.

A two man central midfield set up can work in a 4231. The 2 have a far less offensive job than they do in a 433, for example. So those two are both focused on protecting the defense and doing the work in the middle of the park. They have to be disciplined, but it's a good idea. Traore, Gil and Grealish behind Ayew or Gestede would be wonderful. With players like Sinclair and Gabby able to come in.

Set up properly I'd expect 1 of the 3 to be much closer to the midfield 2 anyway so I think we'd be a 3 in there it would just be a less fixed position  I certainly think Grealish can do that and all the reports on traore suggest he's happy to come a little deeper and put the work in if needed.  Gil probably a little less so but that's ok.  With Amavi looking so good going forward I think starting Grelaish left but letting him drift deeper and more central would work pretty well.

The 4231 formation needs good full backs who can move forward and bolster the two holding midfielders and be able to defend and hold possession higher up the pitch.

I've just watched that Traore video, if he we're a youth team player you'd be wetting yourself and saying get him in the squad. I know the level is much lower but he has some serious talent. If we can harness it and get an end product to it he's potentially another £30m+ player.
