Obviously the players are trying - it's such a boring cliche to say they're not, as if everything in football is decided not by skill, or tactics, or teamwork, or luck, but just by 'trying hardest'. Everyone is trying in the sport with a few notable exceptions, and you can really really tell when they're not. The players have been unfit, they've played badly, they're mentally about as tough as snowflakes, they've been a bit unlucky sometimes and they've been let down by management decisions, but for the most part they've obviously been trying. They're just shit.I thought Gestede was 'trying' to employ a drastic economy of effort. Why does Ayew currently stand out from the rest if they are all busting a gut?

They're just shit.Spot on. I find it puzzling when so many people in football point to a lack of effort in situations like this when surely after our performances over the last 3 or 4 years the most likely reason for our failure is just because we've got too many players who simply aren't good enough for the level they're at. You could hardly say we've seen enough from them previously to say that they've clearly got the ability locked away somewhere and they just can't be arsed.
I think that's just a style thing. Ayew is sprinting around a lot but he does get out of position a bit through following the ball. The others may look like they're not trying as hard, but perhaps they're just trying to stay in position more.

I can't remember who it was, but one of our players absolutely tore him a new one when he just lazily loped into the box, then just stopped as the ball came in. He's crap, AND he's lazy.
I'd rather have Marlon or Ivanhoe instead of Gestede, that's how crushingly bad he is

There were a couple of instances yesterday where players were hiding from the ball when we were in possession. Looked like they were scared to take responsibility.
I'm sure it'd help a LOT if we had a leader/voice out on the pitch. As it is we have a collection of individuals with little communication or direction.Giving Richards the armband is one thing, but that doesn't mean he's comfortable being the voice/leader, it doesn't come naturally to him clearly, and Lescott is the same. That said, i've no idea how in our side it would come naturally to. But we need someone to do the talking out there ASAP
