Watching the Villa, it's like watching Brazil!
(especially the first thirty minutes)

WM quite rightly hammering Sherwood

And your point is?

Sherwood is not responsible for players making basic, fundamental mistakes. The team hasn't changed a great deal over the last few weeks, so, by now, they should all know their jobs. It's a one off. Crap, embarrassing and a potential turning point had the teams around us not lost, but, to blame Sherwood is harsh. Unfortunately, given the injuries and the lack of buying power due to coming to the club after the window closed, Sherwood is hamstrung and HAS to pick these defenders.

Some good news, we are first up on Motd .

Great.

Pains me to say it, but at least we're sharing the limelight with Stevie Gee.

Naturally. The BBC commentary was gleefully saying our thrashing would be first up on MOTD even during the match.

Exactly, Newby. I think today will turn out to be a blessing in disguise and, in some ways, it was a freak result, albeit against a very accomplished Southampton side. At least Sherwood will now know that Vlaar is not fit to ever again wear a Villa shirt and that it is risky to play a central defender carrying an injury (Okore). It's to be hoped that Baker and Senderos are soon fit, albeit with the length of time the latter has been out it's surely a risk to bring him in on the 30th.

So then how do we counter this against Arsenal - they will murder us if we play this high in two weeks.

We're very fragile when it comes to injuries. It only takes a couple to fuck up our form totally. Having Baker and Clark both out at the same time was always going to make things tricky, because those two have been by some distance our best defenders all season. It's weird, because Vlaar only seems to look solid with Clark or Baker alongside him. Those two look rubbish when they play together. And Okore has one game where he looks really very promising, and the next he'll look like a baby elephant that's just been shot with a tranquiliser dart.

The problem today was that every member of the back four individually had an absolute shocker. You can survive with one or even two playing poorly, but when all four go tonto you're just fucked.

I'll hazard a guess that Clark/Baker look dodgy for same reason Okore/Vlaar look like Sunday League amateurs today.

Someone playing on their "wrong side" with an inexperienced player alongside.

Clark/Baker always looked worse than dodgy as they were both inexperienced with horribly exposed fullbacks on either side.
Okore/Vlaar looked worse today with Hutton at left back, leaving holes everywhere.

Okore/Clark or Vlaar/Clark or Baker have looked pretty decent because the balance is right, especially with 2 players playing fullback on their natural sides.

I don't get it: how can one of the form teams of the PL lose so badly to a team that's lost recently to Leicester, Sunderland and even the baggies not so long ago?

Depends if they would pay double if we won 6-1.

Firstly the fans made a long trip and deserved better. Even if you watch that 10 times you don't know how such a hat trick can happen. And if you play that match 10 times such a scoreline in first half is not normal too happen. The problem in complacency for a point needed was apparent and unfortunately undid the villa and match as a contest. This is far the most disappointing result under Sherwood and it does raise a question during the week on preparation and the tired team selection. Sherwood should be embrasssed by that first half today. The motivational issue for the game was clearly lost on all apart from the superb fans.
