Platt scores four in 18 mins vs Ipswich 1988
« on: February 23, 2015, 03:19:08 PM »

By McGrath we had some big wins in cup games in 88-89, my first full season as a Villan. For some reason the season's vhs review only covered league games so all those glorious cup matches vs Birmingham, Millwall and Ipswich didn't feature. The B-lose and Millwall encounters have been featured on other tapes but this is the first time I recall seeing the goals from this game since 1988. Alan McInally, Tony Daley and David Platt ran riot in this one and I particularly remember we were 6-0 up before conceded two late on, something that happened again the following season vs Everton. Best goal of the lot for me was Platt's header. Looking at his involvement here, I also forget how prolific a goalscorer Derek Mountfield was in those days, I can only think of Laursen in recent years that scored so many from centre-back.

The Andy Gray miss was the highlight of this game for me. He was virtually standing on the goal line and still put it over the bar somehow.

yes I forgot about that. He wasn't the worst player we ever had.  Gareth Williams was a sub in this game, he didn't feature too much. Kevin Gage was under-rated I think. I remember Tommy Johnson missed a similar one in the 4-4 vs Leicester, hit the underside of the bar but thankfully Yorkie knocked in the rebound.

Was that Dalian scoring at the end for Ipswich?

Yes it was, looking a little trimmer than when we signed him.

For some reason that was the first thing I thought of when I saw this new topic. My other memory is they had the blonde guy in goal who went on to Oldham. Hallworth?

Nice to see a typical Dalian goal at the end. He really did have all the talent in the world, shame about the diet and work rate.  Has any seen the McInally wonder goal against Millwall in the same competition ? I haven't seen it in years.

I thought Bob Hall mentions Craig Forrest, it was Jon Hallworth that played for ITFC at the time too.

Thanks for posting this, brings back a funny Villa memory for me.   As a bunch of 18 year old gobshites at the back of the Holte, my gobbiest mate got warned by a copper for swearing and V-flicking at Ipswich before kick-off, ignored the warning so got lifted about 5 minutes in.  He was let out of whatever room they held you in and back into the Holte on about 80 minutes at 6-0 up just in time to catch the consolation goals, the muppet.
