Motivation seems to be a bit of a buzz word on sports forums but it actually means nothing (please read on before you whine at me).  What people are actually referring to is confidence, which is a very different beast. All sports, at the highest levels, become based on 2 things: you're skill levels and your acceptance of them.  A confident team who all know what they're capable of and make the right decisions based on that will be successful (within it's goals) more often than not.

A mon style motivator can work, but the whole club becomes about that person and their ability to keep everyone believing in them.  Creating that confidence through good coaching and clear, effective tactics is much more sustainable.

Some of the out pourings of grief would make you think we'd just appointed Billy McNeil again.

I am really glad that there are a few posters coming out with something a bit more positive. Anyone would think he was an unmitigated disaster at Spurs, which he wasn't at all.

Yep, like it or not, he's here now boys and girls so we've got to grin and bear it and most importantly - get behind him & the team starting tomorrow!

He will be better than Lambert. Good enough for now.
The 'banter' that comes with him is not really to my taste but perhaps its one that works well with footballers.

A buyer for the club is more important.

Looking forward to hopefully watching a normal football team - it can't take much to organise. We have good players!

Those blogs can't be dismissed entirely. I'll always listen to fans of other clubs when it concerns such things, as they will have spent more time watching him and his sides than we have.

That said, even in those blogs they alluded to opinion being divided, with some Tottingham fans thinking he did a good job.

We have plenty of our own armchair tacticians on this site (I slip into that category too, on occasion) but a guy who has coached one of the better clubs over an extended period of time (if we count the five years prior to his appointment last season) must have a bit about him.

On their main argument, it also looks like that blog was wrong about Walker playing as a number 10. According to Mourinho, he played right wing that game.  Not so outlandish, considering many here said he'd be better as a right winger during his loan stint with us. He might have been instructed to start wide right, but with a brief to cut infield, pulling their CM or CB out of position. I didn't watch the game, so I can't say with any real certainty.

If that comes off, you are hailed as a tactical genius.

Mourinhio put one of the world's best forwards at the time (Eto) in a wide midfield/ defensive position during the CL final back in 2010. Closer to home, BFR started Dalian Atkinson in wide midfield and brought in rookie Graham Fenton for the 1994 LC final, when we had the likes of Houghton and Parker available.

I will always side with managers who show a bit of dash when it comes to such things.  Rather than a manager playing the same formation relentlessly, regardless of the changing match situation (O'Neill) or a manager playing a player consistently out of position to no obvious gain (Houllier with Ashley Young) or a manager playing the same shitehouse regardless of form (Lambert > Cleverly).

KG I can assure you that Spurs that day were, as they so often were under Sherwood, as wide open as a canyon.

In which case let us be thankful Ramsey and Ferdinand are staying at QPR and hope the coaching team around him provide some tactical depth beyond what they managed to at Spurs with him eh?

Yep, I'm quite comfortable with those two not rocking up at VP.
