That team looks shit, we lost arguably our two best players out of it (Keown and McInally) but signed God and nearly won the league.

It was ace supporting the Villa back then.

Definitely on a Saturday, although it was a bank Holiday weekend. We played QPR on the following Monday. And the away support was big as it was a relegation six pointer and they had just brought their golden boy back to the club. Butler was in goal that day. I can't actually recall us playing West Ham at home in midweek in my time going to Villa Park.

Good point there Damo. The only time I can recall playing at home v W Ham was a Monday night at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season, when we somehow contrived to lose the ball in their half with a few seconds to go and they ran up the pitch and equalised.

Considering we sold two of our best players and replaced them with a non league striker who never got in the first team, Adrian Heath who was a flop signing, a crocked Man Utd reject and a relative unknown from the Danish league, the improvement in our league position from the season before was quite astounding. We didn't even get off to a flying start. To be fair, the washed up United reject and the Danish bloke weren't bad as signings go.
