Ray Clemence had a bit of a stinker didn't he?!

You used to see a lot of looping, fairly aimless, crosses into the box in those days (throughout the 80s I think). Are teams just too organised now for that to be effective? It seemed to lead to a lot of goals, but that may have been law of averages.

Centre-forwards were given a fair crack at challenging with the 'keeper. Not to the point my old man gets all misty-eyed about in the fifties, but you could jump with them, so the loopy cross put "under the bar" was a decent tactic if you had a no.9 who could jump, and their 'keeper couldn't.
