Footballer Cosmin Moti is likely to be handed the keys to the city of Razgrad – if not to the whole of Bulgaria – after saving two penalties as a stand-in goalkeeper in a shoot-out which saw his club Ludogorets Razgrad through to the main stages of the Champions League tonight.

With the crunch game tied 1-1 at the end of extra time – and Razgrad keeper Vladislav Stoyanov having been sent off for a professional foul with no substitute keepers on the bench – Moti was the outfield player who bravely agreed to take up position between the posts.

But not before putting his team ahead by scoring the first goal himself.

He went on to save the second penalty from opponents Steaua Bucharest and then sealed the game – and his place in history – with a second save after the shoot-out went into sudden death.

He was one step off his line, same as just about every keeper in the world is when facing a penalty.

If i ran world football, two things I would ban:

1. Keepers being off the line when penalties are taken.
2. Players taking penalties stopping in their run up - John Aldridge was the world's worst for that. It's contrary to the spirit of the game.

Agreed. And encroaching at penalties. Sometimes another player is nearly level with the penalty taker as he shoots and yet you rarely see a penalty having to be retaken.

Although if I was in charge of football i'd ban John Terry, Sky, stupid KO times, Chavski, Alan Pardew. And then retire a happy man.

olaftab is right when he says sometimes the keeper is half way towards the kicker by the time the ball is struck and they regularly get away with it. Just as the refs didn't often enforce the old rule about not moving in any direction until the kick is taken. Another one that gets me is people casually strolling half a mile along the touchline to take a throw in way ahead of where the ball went out.

Unless it's one of our players, upon which the referee will book said player and then award a free kick for the cheek of it.
