And that Juventus team weren't even (according to reports - I missed the other one) the best team to play here that year. Moscow Spartak were even better.

I agree wholeheartedly.  I was at both games, and whilst we competed against Juventus, Spartak played us off the park.  I really thought I was watching a future European Powerhouse in the making.  There are times when you walk away having been beaten and think, I can have no complaints about that.  Super team but they just basically sank without trace.

Too young myself for both games, but I remember Celta Vigo absolutely schooling a very decent Villa side at home.
Yup, they were a smashing side - Mostovoi pretty much took us apart in that Villa Park game.

I seem to recall it was that UEFA Cup run that first made Claude Makelele and Michel Salgado's names as well.

Spartak put in a fantastic performance. I was only about 12 but even at that age I knew i'd just seen an excellent side. They played better than Juventus did at VP.

I just really enjoy seeing Real Madrid lose. Silly twats waving their white hankies.

Trabzonspor at Villa Park was a pretty gutting night even though we won the 2nd leg.

I think they lost to Sparta Rotterdam in the next round - hardly world-beaters.

It's odd the references to Spartak Moscow on this thread because just the other day I heard for the first time that just 1 year before playing us in the UEFA Cup, there was a fatal crush at one of their UEFA cup games that killed more than 60 people.

It doesn't seem to be as well known as other stadium disasters.

Just the £1200+ to see Slippy play his last game at Anfield. I would laugh so much if he got crocked and couldn't play.

Listening to the speed with which the Real fans get on the backs of their players, it makes me wonder how the pampered, spoiled fuckers would handle year after year of the utter pigshit we've served up, week in, week out, for the last five years.

a wave of suicide bombings probably

Was Moscow Spartak the team Mark Walters scored that great goal against in the away leg, we were wearing that hooped shirt?

It was covered up by the Russian government & media and I think details only got out post-glasnost.

Don't think much of Rafa's Pullis impression.

Slight aside but found out today why at night games Stamford Bridge appears so poorly lit.
LED floodlights. Only team in PL with them. The light doesn't come across well on TV

Quite enjoying the Southend v Stevenage game, end to end 1-1, 2-2 on aggregate.
