The club has money too. Not all player purchases come from Randy's personal account.

if the Gueye fella has signed at nine million surely that's an indication that either a takeover is on the way , Randy has suffered a heat induced aberration and opened his purse, or Benteke is already being fitted up with his new red shirt.

I don't think, with the wage restructuring over the last few years and the new TV deal, that spending this sort of sum in a player is that surprising from Lerner or indicative of anything happening or not happening.  Lerner spent about £7m each on Benteke and Kozak in recent years, for example and was prepared to spend similar on Cleverley last summer..  I'm certainly not in denial about it being reasonably likely that Benteke will go but I would have expected us to spend some money on a midfielder regardless

I think - and I am probably clutching at straws here - that the difference is, this summer there is actually a significant amount of business we need to do, and we've also been disabused of the idea that you can just chuck a load of £1m players in and it'll fill the gaps nicely, so spending 9m is a bit different.

Then I was thinking, maybe this is money that was earmarked to fulfill an agreement with Man U re Cleverly - ie we can't get a 7m deal through in time, make it a loan with the money to come in the summer, but that sort of deal seems a bit far fetched.

Oh, I dunno.

Whatever it is, fingers crossed it is part of a reinstatement of ambition. I wasn't a massive fan of the Sherwood appointment, putting it lightly, but to have any chance of succeeding, he's going to need backing.

I would be surprised if we didn't spend a reasonable amount of money on a left back, winger/forward and maybe a goalkeeper.  And if Benteke goes probably another forward, regardless of takeovers or whatever.

I imagine there is a decent budget available regardless of any potential takeover. We're finally on top of our finances again, there's an even bigger TV deal around the corner and we're clinging onto Premier League status for our dear lives and it can't escape anybody the size of job needed this summer.

One of the most unfortunate side effects of the past few years is that we don't think independently good things can happen to us. Case in point Gueye signing must mean Delph is leaving. It can't be that he is now an addition to play alongside Delph. Or this must be the Benteke money we are spending, not the money from the massive TV deal. I realize that this won't go away overnight but it would be so nice to be mostly optimistic again reserving the right to be miserable bastards on occasion. As opposed to the other way around.

lighten up; you can't help but be a little sceptical given the circumstances surrounding the club at the moment. The fee for Gueye is a hefty £12.7m, significant dosh to a club that have been pretty parsimonious recently,  so if it's takeover money, or Randy's money, brilliant. if it's Benteke money maybe not so brilliant but if we snag him, a good buy.

I didn't read the post as gloomy, really. He's (TV I mean) right, though, a few years of not spending much are bound to make us more cynical or suspicious - which is pretty much what you said yourself in the first sentence.

Then add in the near continual grimness of our football in that period and you start to see how it has moved beyond transfers, as if we've started to get conditioned into expecting bad things rather than good.

You know those things they use to resuscitate people when their hearts stop beating? Those pad things that emit an electric shock and cause the patient to jump up off the bed?

That what this club needs, really, a summer which will have that type of effect, a summer which will help more of us snap out of it. A good takeover is the obvious potential candidate to do this, obviously, but some decent signings would be a big help too.

This one is hopefully just a start, but like you say, it's a good buy and not a bargain basement one.

I think you misunderstood the point of my post. Paulie's pretty much summed it up but just to clarify, and I was talking generally that there will remain an underlying feeling of cynicism until we have sustained period of good things happening to the club. Many of the good things have been swallowed by the on field misery and it will be welcomed by all if we can get past this stage of our history. This signing is absolutely positive news. How many of us even conceived the club spending £9m on an established international a week ago? He looks a real talent and I cannot wait to see him line up next to Delph and supplying Benteke.

I reserve the right to remain optimistic until we get some bad news i.e. Delph or Benteke leaving.

If we can get to the end of the window with these 2 and a couple more signings like this one then it could be a fun season.

...but if we do keep Delph then he's certain to get a broken leg in training and be out for the season! ;)
