I wonder how far the price of oil and gas has to fall before somebody raised the question of whether the clubs being bankrolled by energy oligarchs can continue spending on the scale they did when energy prices were at their peak.   Our billionaire owner seems to have very heat sensitive fingers.

I'm probably misunderstanding your comment, but arguably Randy is better placed - i.e. his income is not derived from the energy industry - compared to abramovich and the man city crew.  Are you suggesting he's cunningly biding his time before pouncing again and investing heavily in players, whilst the others have been hit by the oil price drop?

I'd imagine Paul Allen might be preoccupied these next 2 weeks as the Seahawks have a fairly big game coming up.

That is what I am suggesting Dante.   There are so many straws in the wind, the latest being the printing of over a trillion euros of QE announced yesterday that a shrewd billionaire could step in and exploit positions being abandoned by those inclined to cut and run.

I think it would have to drop a long way before the owners of Chelsea or Man City were in trouble. Remember they own these clubs for other reasons than making money.

Not so sure Yoss.   Oil has dropped by nearly three fifths already and if deflation kicks in it could make Wall St in 1929 look like a game of ha'penny nap.   (a low stakes card game played by the very poor)

So global economic doom but we might
win the FA cup? Bring it on indeed.

In terms of oil prices you have to remember Saudi are supporting the price plunge by over supplying the market rather than turning the pumps off. To spite Russia ? Possibly.

Russia and Iran.

There are a number of scenarios.

One is the Saudis trying to drive out the high cost producers. In particular the shale oil production in the US is very short term and is largely financed by high yield debt( junk bonds to you and me). Other high cost producers are deep see and oil sands.

Another is that it a desperate US manouvre to weaken Russia/Iran/Venuzuela.

If BG's explanation is correct, then we do not have to worry about Villa too much, because WW3 will shortly be starting and we won't have to worry about anything any more.

I think WW3 is a far more likely proposition than Abu Dhabi running out of money. We've long held the dream that we might succeed due to other clubs' failures. Remember Ellis's jam tomorrow spiel? Remember when we all thought Liverpool were finished? That Russian will get bored and do one; the sheikhs will soon go back to building sand castles, etc.

Keep on dreaming. I'm dreaming we'll be bought by this Paul Allen bloke, but every fibre of my being is telling me it won't happen because we'll never get that lucky. Will we?
