I see we are still talking about Collymore which means there is no exciting takeover news

Can't believe you're being so disrespectful to our new owner.

If I could go back to one realistic time it would be the day of the 1996 League Cup final. Not only were we on the big stage but for the only time in my life we behaved like we belonged there and this was a normal day at the office - play, win a trophy, move on to the next one. We had big game players, they hadn't cost a fortune but they could be relied upon to perform when the occasion demanded. Whether we or any other club could do that again I don't know. You'll certainly never find players like Yorke and Ugo in the reserves or Wright, Charles and Johnson journeymaning in the lower divisions.
Yes agree with that. I remember driving down to Wembley  and no sign of nerves, no reservations and no doubt. Confident that we will win and win we did because there was absolute  belief in the team and the manager's ability. Playing Leeds team in a downward spiral also helped, of course, but it would be nice to get that feeling about our team again.

I ssem to recall an interview Ellis gave directly after the final. He stated that supporters need not think there were funds available to strengthen the squad.  He claimed that enormous money had already been spent and very little was left for further acquisitions.

Even at the point of success he was taking away the prospect of establishing the club at the top level.

I have always believed the problems at Villa lie with the ownership. It did then and it does now.

Until we have competent ownership we will never have success on the field.

1996. Turn up, batter the gobby Northerns. Carry on.

Curcic was a good signing on paper.

Collymore wasn't. Big time Charlie. When at Forest he spouted off about going to ManU. We could have got Chris Sutton for a lot less and he tore ys a new one on Collymore's home debut.

Little playing Yorkie in midfield was the beginning of the end. For him. And for us as genuine title contenders. For my life time.

In my almost 40 years watching, the only three signings which made me think we were acting like a big club, signing exciting players, were Dean Saunders, Darren Bent and Stan Collymore.

Say what you like about Houllier but the way he arrogantly swatted away Steve Bruce's whining over Bent made me think our manager was acting like we were a big club, too.

Same with his ruck with that twat Holloway.

I liked that side of Houllier.

I think Ashley Young as well - we asked how much Watford wanted and paid it without blinking. Doug would have spent a fortnight haggling.
the signing of JPA was a big deal too, in terms of the money spent. Yes he was relatively unknown but 9.5m was a lot of money back then. Still is really.

Yeah me too. I know he had his detractors and people jumped all over his 7th to 12th comment (he was right and oh for that now) and he was slated for his Liverpool love in (he nearly died whilst with them and spent a lot of time there, I didn't care too much for that) that aside I think he did act like we were a big club and it was a big loss when he fell ill IMO (for the smart arses, yes we got better once he was ill, but I think that's just because things started to click) I could see what he was trying to do. RL was willing to back him to and when he went RL gave up and then the rest his history.

I was having a drink yesterday with my American friend Donald (not that one) and he would like to make it clear he doesn't own a private jet and it isn't parked at BHX.  Plus he has no interest in buying Aston Villa but he is looking to buy a house in Harborne.

That's a bugger, I was thinking of going into town shopping, but if no one is going to sell me anything I wont bother.

Just a rumour. I should have elucidated.

Hour and a half to go.  I am quite literally wetting myself in anticipation.
