The most obvious racist use of the term I know of recently is by Boris Johnson - Africans and their "watermelon smiles".

I didn't about know this so looked it up and found he also referred to "crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies".  The man really is an odious piece of shite.

Blimey. In what context?

The context of him being a fucking twat that will say and do anything to any demographic to get a bit of attention and further his own cause.

The fact that he can utter these verbal turds without anyone in the mainstream media apparently challenging him on it says far too much him about both the blonde haired c*** and the British media unfortunately.

I think Johnson argues that it was a clumsy way of trying to attack Tony Blair for believing that all he had to do was turn up like Bono to sort the world's problems out, but judge for yourself:

There is no excuse for using the term watermelon smile or picanniny. None.

Here is the article I read: Guardian Link

Cheers - just read that article from 8 years ago which in turn referred to his comments 6 years prior to that. Luckily he is a reformed character eh?

I don't recall ever hearing this word so had to search on tinterweb. I was amazed to see on Wiki that the Smal Faces had an album track by this name in the 60s.

There is not a single mitigating factor about him. I never thought I could hate a British politician more than Thatcher, but I think he has even plumbed that depth. For all her hateful, divisive politics, I think she at least lacked his naked, selfish ambition.

He could stand in a field wearing his mothers best white pillow case on his head for all I care. There's H&V tradition of off topic bification and then there's this new monstrosity which is beyond the pale.

Ads, I'd normally agree with you. It drives me mad when you look at a topic you're interested in, see there's a load of new pages and then end up screaming and swearing when you find it's all off topic. However, for some reason, I'm really enjoying this one. It may just be that I have given up work to look after the kids so Mrs Mike can pursue her career and this is the closest I get to adult conversation. A low bar indeed.

Apart from the football related stuff I find the whole of Heroes and Villains an excellent, informative read.  There have been threads, the Charlie Hebdo being an excellent example, where the content of this forum has been as high, if not higher than the serious journals.

I love the surprise outbursts and tangents of H and V.  It would, in my view, be a less exciting and stimulating place if all we ever read or write on here had to be neatly tooth combed into relevance and appropriateness.

I consider myself to be pretty widely read and I see this forum as different, special and stimulating.  It's diversity, unpredictability and wide range of attitudes is what makes it so.

Just over a week ago I was lambasted for suggesting this thread had gone to bollocks. Some even suggested there was a debate  regarding the takeover taking place :/

Lucky bastard

He isn't! I did this in '98 and it was hell for 2 years. My empathy for the lot of women trapped at home went through the roof.
