If you're Tony Pulis, and Villa come begging, you're hardly likely to say "yeah, i'll help out for a few months while you're looking for a better option." You'd demand a proper deal, surely?

If I was Tony Pulis self loathing would have driven me to end it all many years ago.

If you're Tony Pulis and Villa come calling, of course you'll say yes. Bigger job than you've had before is the perfect chance to show off what you can really do.

We're at such a low ebb, and have been for such a long time that we really can't be  thinking a top man will come to us. Why would they?

It depends what you mean by "top man", surely?

I wouldn't expect us to be competing for the most in demand, but I'd expect us to be able to attract someone who knows what he's doing.

I totally get the argument re Pulis, but imagine years of watching the cheating, snidey gamesmanship and terrible football his Stoke used to play.

I want us to fix the problem, but not just create a slightly different one.

How is it going to make out new CEO look. First big decision, give the manager a four year deal.... a few weeks later fire him, with all the compensation clauses that no doubt will come into play. No chance it's going to happen for a good while yet.

It does seem unlikely that he'll get sacked so soon after being given a new contract but personally I reckon a heavy defeat at some point on the back of a losing run might be too much for even Lambert to survive from.

I don't want Tony Pulis.  I don't want to watch Stoke-heavy, neither do I think he'd have anything like the same effect on a club the size of Aston Villa than he had on Crystal Palace.   It's a totally different prospect.

If Lerner and co didn't try and get Moyes in the summer they're mental.  Maybe they did and that's why Lambert is still here.

I take this point but I'm so sick of us being crap that I'd be prepared to welcome Hitler as manager if it made us win a bit more often.

I know that we are shit at the moment, but reading this thread I get the impression that it is March and we're ten points from safety, not that it's November and we're three points behind Man Utd, four behind Liverpool.

..who are both having ropey seasons...

We've played a quarter of the season and are 2 points form the relegation places and have lost 6 games in a row.   I don't think it's all that bizarre that people are a little 'panicky'!

I realise we're heading for another schism here, but no, no and a thousand times no to Tony Pulis.

Same here. The Plus style and the Lambert style seem very similar to me.

Also it maybe bigoted on my part but no more UK/Irish managers please.

I have had enough I want a modern manager and with very rare exceptions, managers from our country are just not good enough.

There is a reason no British managers have the lead job in the top flight of Germany,Spain & Italy.

I sense we are in real danger of dropping this time and if we do my confidence in us getting back quickly would be nil. I lived through our only other double drop and fear it could be repeated. We have to stay up at all costs so why not get a man in who gets his team organised and difficult to beat? Yes Pulis. A couple of years of his stabilising influence and we might at last be more likely to get a new owner. No one wants to take over a club under annual risk of relegation.
The time for experimenting on young and perhaps foreign coaches is not part way through the season with a limited squad. if we don't make a move for Pulis one of our rivals will, perhaps Sunderland?

Completely fair point. I guess I regard us as more solid than the like of Wolves and others who have double dropped recently.

For me I am weary of seeing Villa play ugly low possession football, tired of being the "oh god change the channel" club on TV, fed up of cheering a shot on goal because we won't be getting many.

I want more than survival , I want to be entertained with modern football. I just don't see any UK/Irish managers capable of that.

But as you note there are some like Pulis who are brilliant at keeping teams in the league. I am just still delusional enough to believe we can aim higher than that.

It was great getting 3 wins and a draw at the season start but we won one, drew one and lost 7 of the final nine games last year and have just lost 6 on the bounce with one goal. My glass is worse than half empty, it's pissing out the bottom. Panicking or realistic? This time around I am panicking.

I'm in agreement that we need someone more progressive than Moyes or Pulis. Who that is I do not know, but if Southampton and Swansea are able to find people, then we should be too.

I'd even consider giving Ads another crack at it.

Me too.  I think we should overlook those issues where he swore at fans and when he got caught in a layby in Cannock with Gillian Taylforth and a golden retriever .  It needs to be a football decision, nothing else.

It's also worth pointing out that the dog was there of it's own free will.

The blind lady accompanying the dog however, was not.

Pulis would come because it's a huge job. But IMO he'd get fed up working with Lerner in the end and walk out like he did with Palace. But that said, if it gets us 6-18 months of solidity, I'd take it over Lambert.

Ideal scenario is we get Moyes in and let him begin building some foundations.

We can't really do a Southamton or Swansea and begin building a modern footballing side until Lerner fucks off unfortunately. It requires an owner who is invested and interested, as well as a set up at the club and a bit of nous to make it happen. It's the way we really need to go, but we need a takeover first.

Under Lerner the best we can hope for is Moyes. Second best probably Pulis. They could move us up to average from where we are now. We're piss poor currently and our best hope under Lambo is mediocre (which is treading water in the bottom 6-7).

I cannot even begin to imagine any reason why Moyes would come to Villa.   We have absolutely nothing to offer him, not even a thumping great wedge of a salary because he can demand that anywhere.   Time for us to face the realities of our situation.   We need a short term appointment to give us a bit of status and self respect back, then try for a top drawer long term manager.   It is never going to happen because it is too easy to muddle through and hope for the best.   Problem is if you hope for the best repeatedly, eventually you get the worst.

Unsubstantiated internet rumours of Moyes going to Real Sociedad.
