If Benteke had stayed on the pitch and we had won the game today, we would have been on equal points with Man Utd.

If we hadn't lost the last six games we'd have been higher up the table, too, but we did.

That's the point, every team can make excuses but at the end of the day we're losing every week. This is a consistent pattern in Lambert's reign.

And if my aunty had balls.....

The truth is, Benteke DID get sent off and we capitulated, giving Lambert a ready made excuse for losing the game. Oh, and we played SO well, we mustered a whole one shot on target, again. Watch the game again and look for the errors. We are so very bad. We actually gave the ball away, under no pressure, four times in the first 90 seconds of the game. He has to go because the job is just beyond him.

Why is it, every club going through a crap spell can rely on the Villa to get their season back on track?

Was thinking about this last night and have figured it out. Randy saw into the future one evening over a glass of a cheaper brand of wine than usual. The years of austerity having taken its toll even in his choice of beverage. He foresaw the run that Dortmund were about to embark upon (7 losses in 10) the start of which coincided with excellent start we had to our season. In a moment of panic, a rumble in bowels, he picked up the phone and called Lambert (a Dortmund legend) now fearful that he was to lose his great manager as many had predicted we would when he first arrived. A new contract was delivered and the rest is history. Unfortunately the years of austerity had also put a cap on his ability to read more than one future and he failed to see our current 5 game losing run and no goals.

There's as much chance of that being the truth as any other explanation I've encountered.

If Benteke had stayed on the pitch and we had won the game today, we would have been on equal points with Man Utd.
Assuming we would have won which wouldn't be guaranteed.

We would, and we've had tougher games than them.

We would, and we've had tougher games than them.

The problem is, we didn't, and we never seem to manage to do what we should do.

We were much better than QPR on Monday, I thought, but got zero points. We managed to be only remotely threatening today, but that wasn't the worst we've played by far. The thing is, though, Spurs looked to me like the worst team we have played all season, and we not only couldn't protect our lead, we lost.

I appreciate there are sometimes arguments that we didn't play so badly in this match or that match, or for this half and that half, but ultimately, we have still conspired to lose six games in a row.

That would be bad enough if it was just the first awful run we've been on under this manager, but it isn't, it isn't even close to being the first. This is getting par for the course - decent result, followed by an absolute abomination of a period.

What will happen next is that this run will continue, then we'll pull some random, impressive, Liverpool style result out of the bag, and the manager will be safe for a bit longer, but ultimately, we are going to finish round about 15th yet again, and that is because we haven't improved.

We will finish 15th because we're the 15th best side in the league. There seems to be no progress, it's like we're locked into some horrible Groundhog Day scenario where it's the same thing over and over again, and it never seems to change.

Yeah, Lambert was maybe unlucky today, but there won't be much sympathy for him, because before today we'd taken zero points from fifteen, and not scored a single goal for nine hours.

Spot on, and I think someone needs to get the message to those folks down in Surrey and Cornwall that despite their desperate attempts on Talkshite to convince the world and themselves that there are signs of improvement, the company they're keeping suggests otherwise.

It's just not going to work out here for Lambert. No matter how hard he tries,  it just ain't gonna happen. Time for him to move on for the best interests of Paul Lambert and Aston Villa.

I just wish someone in the media would ask Lambert about his record. 23 defeats in 36 games

That's why I don't want him in the job. There comes a time when you have to admit you can't get blood from a stone, and Lambert is indicative of the malaise surrounding the club. If he's "lost the dressing room" or has the backing of all the players, it doesn't matter. You can't discount the shot in the arm a new approach can make, and while it's rare for me to really want somebody to lose their job, I can't believe it'll ever improve with him here.

Can't buy into the 'we'll finish 15th' scenario. With Lambert in charge it will be 18th.
