Lambert accepted the restrictions he had to work with, but this season we have ended up in exactly the same position, points wise, as the man he took over from. This cost Alex Mcleish his job, and the same will apply to Paul Lambert. I liked Lambert's ambition and what he was trying to do, but it hasn't worked. And that's a shame.

In fairness they would have been tired. We were chasing the ball for 80 minutes of that game and spurs didn't play

I also maintain that this time last year we WERE on an upward trajectory and there was a foundation of something to build on. I can't really explain exactly what went wrong but a combination of bad luck with injuries, a lot of second season syndrome, behind the scenes issues and the weird 'decision' (?) to start playing long ball stuff made it a miserable season

Agree Matt and I felt we continued that into the first few games of this season, with good performances against some of the top teams.  It's hard to really put a finger on where it began to go wrong, but it soon became clear that many of the players that PL had bought in the summer were not good enough / ready for top flight football.  That left us woefully short of options to change things up.  Of course serious injuries to Okore, Benteke and to some extent Kozak, certainly played their part.

Now unless things are far far worse behind the scenes than we think, then staying up is never an achievement for Aston Villa FC, its players, or its manager.

Maybe things are or have been a lot worse than we realise. In his BBC interview, he again points to some mitigating factors and says it's an incredible achievement "with everything what's happened". I can't imagine his pride or ambition extend to merely surviving relegation.

Post Match Interview

Good interview and makes some salient concise points.

Certainly the most honest interview he's given this season. Why he had to talk out of his arse every week instead of just saying what we all could see? He has a lot to learn but sadly for him I doubt very much it will be at Villa Park.

I've still got the feeling he'll end up at Leeds.

So what actually happens to him now with under a year left on his deal?

If I were Lambert I would probably sense the inevitable. If/when we get a new owner, the liklihood is probably 99.9% certain that he'll get sacked.
I also think the only circumstance he can stay here, is if there's no sale, meaning he'll be working in similar circumstances again. I don't think even Lambert would want to go through this again.

I think, if nothing concrete has happened by the end of the month, he might walk. He'll want to be available for any jobs out there, and want time to work with any new side he moves to.

if Lennon moves to Norwich, maybe Celtic they might go for Lambert

That's been suggested previously and there's a certain amount of logic about it too.

well a new 2/3/4 year contract might be more tempting than hanging around for a few months pay off

presumably Randy won't be funding any transfers and in view of Lambert's comments concerning the urgent need for investment its going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Can anyone remember who funded the purchase of Petrov? Was it Doug who then effectively added it to the price of the club or was it Randy?

Pretty sure it was Randy Lerner who stepped in and bought Petrov.

I know Scottish football is in a bad state but surely Lennon can do better than the Championship if he wants a move.

More likely to be Malky McKay for Norwich, isn't it?

I am pretty sure that Lambert has said previously that he doesn't want to manage in Scotland.
