It's peoples obsession with history that is clouding their perception of realism .

I don't get what you mean by that, can you explain it?

I find it hard to understand those who support Lambert claiming the win against Palace was some sort of
confirmation that they have been right all along. We were battered for almost all the game and most of our possession was passing across our own half back line, we were very very lucky. I will give them that for most of the season Lambert has had injuries to contend with but so do most teams and i look at the records he has set while at Villa. He should have gone weeks ago.

What's he difference between having possession in your own half and then recycling it between having possession in a channel and recycling it? I have read on Palace forums about how they battered us and how well they played.

I didn't see it myself. I saw a poor side struggle to create anything in 97 minutes, where our keeper made one good save following our goal. I saw the same against Sunderland and I conclude that Palace will more than likely be relegated.

To counter the argument that he has been held back by injuries I looked at all the teamsheets since Lambert took over and I've concluded that even when we have Benteke, Vlaar and Delph we still aren't very good. His win percentage only goes up from 29% to 35% in all competitions when the big three have played. In terms of points per game, when all three have played we average 1.29 compared to his overall average of 1.1. Individually there isn't much of a difference either...

If Vlaar plays we average 1.22
If Delph plays we average 1.2
If Benteke plays we average 1.13

So is the problem that these players are not as good as we think they are? Or is it that Lambert can't get good performances no matter what players are available? To me it seems the one consistent factor in the last 2 and a half years is Lambert and I'd be amazed if other managers couldn't do better with what we have.

Isn't 1.29 points calculated across the season 49 points? That would be what, 12th-10th? It got us 9th under Houllier. I would take that for the time being.

How many games has Benteke, Delph and Vlaar played consecutively? Momentum is a big factor and that comes from continuity.

To be fair, we always have key players injured. There are other factors too - I think last season when Vlaar was out, Clark and Baker playing together had a huge detrimental effect on the team. Fortunately they've improved a lot this season. I think statistics, as usual, can be read however you want them to.

I don't think Lambert does himself any favours whatsoever, but he hasn't been the luckiest with injuries.

I maintain the conclusion I have come to - very reluctantly: he does not know how to deploy his players for best effect.
I am not calling for Pulis as PL's replacement, just pointing out how well Pulis deployed pretty average players to great effect at Stoke... and Palace last season. And I am sure any astute, thoughtful manager would.
I consistently see - IMHO - some of our defenders (full-backs), most of our midfield, and almost always Gabby, Weimann, Benteke, Grealish and almost ALL substitutes, NOT used to maximum effect for the team.

I can see what you mean , but to me, palace were on top for the majority of the match.
Zaha and sorry for the spelling - bolaise, were criminal in their final ball/attempts.

Obviously you have to take your chances, but once again a team (a mediocre team) looked likely to beat us. We couldn't string two passes together.

The 1.29 is based on all competitions, and we've won 6 out of 12 cup games, so the 'league only' average would be less. As for momentum we had a 6 game stretch starting in Feb last year where they all played, we drew with Cardiff, lost to Newcastle, beat Norwich and Chelsea then lost 4-1 twice, first at home to Stoke and then away to Man United. So hardly a stellar run when they were in the side.
